  • OMG Newgirly I just cannot believe this. Not only have they given you false hope and information, they have absolutely no idea just how hard it was for you to even reach the decision to put your application in. Weeks and weeks of number crunching and weighing up all the pros and cons, gutted for you. :grouphug:

I guess the next question is what now? Are you going to try to appeal against their decision, is there any point trying? Will it be down to saving like fury now?

You take as long as you want :( and come back when you are ready.

  • That's really annoying that they kind of led you on and you made plans based on the advice you were given. The boogers.

Thanks guys, I am just feeling sorry for myself, it's hardly the end of the world. I just feel a bit guilty that the boys share and DD lives in a shoe box! Oh well, I think I probably worry about it more than they do.

The plan is now to NOT be silly and try and get a loan. As for saving for the loft, it will take about 3 years, so I'm thinking of just oping instead, if in 3 years we still need to stay in this house because of prices we will re-mortgage then and get it done, if we can hang on longer we could move a few years down the line somewhere that we would stay in for good. (both of us agree we don't want to stay here forever).

Either way, the kids will have to share for a fair while yet. One thing we will do is try and make the house a bit more presentable, sort out the bathroom and kitchen, and we promised next door we would put the hot tub in a log cabin as the noise annoys him in the summer. So I guess the kids will have a little extra space to play in there.

I'm going to keep the mortgage on IO for the next 3 months to build up some money to do the improvements and then switch back to Oping as much as possible.

My good news today is I bought a giant cupcake sillicone mould to make myself a birthday cake, I wanted one last year but they were £30, today I found one in the cheap bookshop for £5.99 , its not all doom and gloom here after all!

oh what a shame hun, I keep thinking about converting my loft when I pay off the mortgage but once that is done my kids will be 16 and 17 and probably not many years left at home. would love to be able to do it now as DD has a really small room too

So I guess the OPing for a few years then and maybe trying to borrow it back afterwards when they can offer you what you need? Better to OP on the mortgage rate than to save on the poor rates I suppose? Its so annoying when you plans have to change but we seem to adapt dont we.

Oh no! that is rubbish! why do banks give you the run around like that?!

And where there is a will there is a way - maybe this knock back will spur you on with the savings and maybe that with a 0% credit card or a small loan you'll get it anyway........Your kids know no better, the boys are used to sharing so they will be ok for a few more years......(says the woman with no kids, but who shared a room with her sister).....

Hope the week picks up for you!

  • Hey NG,

Sorry to hear about the bank, these things happen.

Keep your chin up, and keep saving away and in a while situations will change to allow the loft conversaion.

Thanks again guys. I have had a good chat with DH (I chatted he listened ;)) tonight. We have agreed that our aim now is to :

    1) put up a log cabin
    2)cheapish new bathroom-fitted by DH
3)plaster kitchen ceiling and replace all manky bits
    4)OP the mortgage ASAP
5)get loft done in 3 years or move in 7-10 ish years if possible.

Maybe we need to save a bit as well as I've been more focused on oping. Also I'd like to plan lots of small cheap trips and weekends as often as we can, to enjoy life a bit on the way, and make a small budget for fun as well as we have not done as much as I'd like in the last year.

  • How pants. Especially the bit about not being able to get back your overpayments. Really pants. Grrrrr. I can't believe they have had you on such an emotional rollercoaster, and i think it is definitely worth a letter of complaint to vent at them.

Room sharing is not the end of the world anyhow. My two will have to do that forever if we stay here, unless one of them opts for the very small box room. Also, i shared with my 2 sisters when i was a kid. I only ever had my own room for a short amount of time. The only time it was really a pain was when i was revising for exams and i had a 9yo and 13yo sister who did not understand about me being left in peace and used to want to watch telly. But then again, i suppose it was also hard on them as i remember me working till late in the night when they were asleep. We get on so well though it hasn't spoilt it for us.

Thanks Michelle, the boys will have to share for a long time now, although dd has a room of her own it is about the same size as the cupboard under the stairs in harry potter. When we first moved in we had to have a builder move the wall as we could not fit a single bed in it!
But on the plus side we are near my parents and friends and the school round the corner is fab, so its not all bad. Sometimes you just have to make the best of what you have and be grateful, my only big worry is its such a long slog being a MFW that I'll get bored and it will tail off. I need to keep coming on here all the time for motivation I think, your diary has really helped me do this so thanks.

My Dds room is the same (and she has the boiler cupboard in there) and she has a cabin bed in there wall to wall so she can have all her junk, I mean things, underneath. Outside my room is a little alcove thing which has shelves which has all the kids games and things. she has enough room for a wardrobe and her bed and a small table with a tv on. She does grumble about it and it will probably get worse as she gets older (shes 9) But like you our house is near small tescos and walkable to town and the secondary school is a couple of streets away which will makes things a lot easier in a few years. It has a park behind the houses over the road. Our dentist is a few streets away as well. I love the size of my living room/diner and my room and the boys room is quite big. But we always want more dont we. Its natural. Its just her room that I wish was bigger.
I watched cowboy builders tonight and there loft conversion was lovely, would love to be able to do it too but not financially feasable :(
