Alex why don't you start selling classic cars as a business?
I can see why people go for modern fuel economy/safety. After many winters with my mum running down the street pushing my dads mgb to get it goingI guess it depends what type of classic car and new car we are talking. The new little suzuki i looked at does 83mpg with no tax, the petrol version, thats a massive saving if you commute.
Most of the cars i have looked at over many years are now really going up in value, even modern cars that are barely classics are shooting up. I would never spend a lot on a new car as you just lose so much, my parents are the ones who buy brand new then change in a year or two (To avoid losing too much money )
Not sure what to do with my eric money, £400 was birthday money ( I know its a lot it was my 40th) so i am tempted to keep a bit back and possibly buy a very cheap or second hand laptop , the rest is mortgage or 0% cc's.
I buy and sell the odd classic and did for a time consider making it a business. However, I don't want the pressure of a full time business buying and selling classic cars. At the moment it's a bit of fun with no pressure to find 'stock' and something both Mrs K and I can enjoy.
Regarding fuel economy, with petrol at just over £1 per litre, yes I understand why. Our most economical car is the LR Discovery which does about 28mpg, when I'm running that it does seem like the fuel lasts for an awfully long time.A lot of the 'it'll be unreliable' comments I have found to be largely untrue. Yes, they require more maintenance and preventative maintenance. They probably do break down a little more often and I'm just used to running old cars but parts don't cost as much and everything is DIYable.
The classic market is an interesting one at the moment. Things are going up but there's also a lot of 'chancers' jumping on the bandwagon and many dealers are having to sell stock at auction. Values are set to stop rising according to the classic car press. Of course there will be newer cars considered 'classic', everything is getting older.
Apart from a couple of Land Rover Defenders that have historically been run until they die, my parents haven't bought new cars.
If you want to use Eric money towards the mortgage, that's a good idea.2018 totals:

Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -

Personally, I'm not so sure. However, what's important is NG feeling she did the right thing.2018 totals:

I would take a ton down the bank and have them checked otherwise you might have a lot of 20's to get spent on trips to wetherspoons0

I worked in a shop for years so am good at spotting dodgy notes, checked the serial no.s as much as I could without taking all day
although saying that a few nights out in the pub would be nice!
Thanks for the support everyone, I think in the future I may regret selling the car as I am ridiculously sentimental, but for now its the right descision. It won't make a huge difference but things are very tough at work with wages being cut. Our assistant manager has started cycling to work (i am assuming its to save money). I just feels the right thing to do.
To cheer myself up I'm watching a lego advent calendar on amazon, I've always fancied one and according to hukd its been flitting between £13 and £19 all day, fingers crossed it drops again tonight.MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0 -
Oh wow, just had a text from the guy that bought the mini, he wanted to know if I had sent off the registration papers. I said yes, then he text back saying "eric is a nice car and is running very well" I am amazed as he didn't speak great english and he remembered his name, ahh feel lots better nowMFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0
