  • It is tight but it is worth it, the kids will love Alton towers, and as for the isa mistake it may be a blessing as it wouldn't have been saved otherwise! Thanks for the book info,

Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

I was reading a book recently about a guy who lived without money. The biggest lesson I got was that there isn't anything (aside from the mortgage) that you actually need that you need to pay out for!

So my words of encouragement are to just question all the things you buy at the moment, ask yourself if they are adding to your happiness or just creating a burden (both in the physical and mental space they occupy, and in the added debt they incur!), and then find ways of doing whatever it is you are left with with little or no expense.

    You can do it!!

I'm trying to have a frugal day to make up for all the spending lately.

    • Made a batch of lemon scented laundry gloop,7 litres for about 70p ish
    • went to country park to get the kids out, £1 to park
    • did 6 loads of washing and hung out on line and various airers
    • will be home colouring dd's hair later
Thats it so far, I have not been doing any meal planning/batch cooking at all lately, we have been so busy and not eating very well at all, with too many junk food meals whilst out.:o

Once dh's birthday is over and the kids are back at school I will get stuck back into it all properly, and the xmas present shopping which is partly done finished.

Not going well today, the washing machine is broken. Its about 12 years old, I can't find anything on google, and dh and dad can't fix it ( as they have before)
Its a mi*le and cost about £800 all those years ago, so apparently they are supposed to last 30 years. So its a case of take a gamble and call someone out who may fix it or buy a new (much cheaper) one.

I have found a new one that does a 14 min quick wash, aa rated with a high spin speed which is good as I try not to use they dryer, for £229 plus 2%tcb.

I feel guilty buying new before trying to get it fixed but 12 years is quite old.:D

We have the new washing machine in, its done a few loads and is great however not sure if its supposed to make so much noise, it had dd and me in stitches last night as it sounded like a helicopter taking off in the other room :D

I am really broke after spending and extra £230 yesterday, I have £10 a day still, but no extra for the weekend when I was going to pay for a meal at the harvester with the kids and a trip to the dogs for dh's birthday. Kids are not allowed at the pub on sat so he wants to do something special with them as well, which is fair enough.

Options are to try and earn enough this week to cover it, or not pay some of the overdraft.

I am just wondering if its worth putting the broken washing machine on ebay? Its possibly fixable and they still sell it in comet (around £800), dh wants to take it to the dump.:(

Did you remove the transit bolts from the back of the machine before plumbing it in?

It normally says in the manual to remove them, I know.. who reads them hey! We had the same problem when we last bought a machine.

I have had a useless month and not only paid hardly anything off, it looks like sept will be the same !

Not really sure what has gone wrong - a combination of things,
    • holiday overspending, but not by much?
    • new washing machine
    • dh's 40th - has cost a lot more than planned , cake/ballons etc.
    • bought school shoes
    • spent too much on kids over summer in dribs and drabs
    • bought some xmas presents
There is not much I an do but try and get back on track, sept is a bad month as well though as I have both parents birthdays, brothers 30th and parents ruby anniversary as well as dh's 40th.
Reallistically, I need to have a big frugal push from now until the end of the year to acheive all the things I listed a couple of posts back, clearing the debts totally, saving a bit in the isa etc.

When they are all back at school it will be easier to plan and get back into baking and batch cooking, plus hopefully I will be more in the mood for cooking when the night start drawing in.

The only success of the last month is I have given up alcohol.
