Oh come on, FH Brit, who on earth are Fortis anyway? I applaud them for their quick reaction to the volcano ash problem, but really, there is no way I could recommend an outfit unless I personally know the organ-grinders, especially with Fortis involvement in the ABN Amro fiasco, or must we forget that so quickly? :D

Entitled to your opinion, I deal with THOUSANDS of claims each year and based on the claims handling and prompt settlement of claims gives me evidence that Fortis are far above the rest.

If you think others are better then you have never claimed and then ended up being credit reported because you have not paid your bill from medical treatment abroad. If Fortis are responsible enough to follow the laws of the country they are doing business in then all the more reason I recommend them. Our Hospital is entitled to the money that travellers owe and if you think that you would rather be credit reported (or worse dependent on circuimstances), then for you Peter, I would recommend Axa or White Horse. As you have obviously dealt with more travel insurance claims than I have then, you deserve them!

I am getting fed up with arguing with your "I know better" attitude and for some reason you seem to be determined to stay on one track with your EU laws (when they only affect some people who are suffering with this situation), and then digging holes in others posts. You could just agree that we are looking at the subject from 2 different views.

You have lost the plot. MSE exists to save people money and give tips, it is not an argument site. You post your views & I'll post mine and the readers can decide for themselves wat they think is better advice or make an educated decision as to what to do.

You are on my ignore list - sorry!

It's not only the cheaper policies that are not paying out. Direct Travel are not paying out and they are not cheap.

Luci - you know better - if we went into detail on EVERY policy issuer it would be a huge post - I have mentioned the ones that I have asked as I speak to their claims/assistance reps.

  • have just spoke to Expedia again, only had to hold for 10 minutes. They cancelled our booking and will receive our refund back onto card in 7 working days. Also recevied an email once we were off the phone to confirm what they said on the phone.
Just kinda hope the flight is now cancelled tomorrow morning!
also car parking booking refunded us our money except admin charge for £7.50
The coach from Charles de gaulle will not refund us which was £100. could have been worse though!

Just been on Working Lunch that Easyjet will consider only "reasonable" costs for hotel accommodation but what is defined as "reasonable" ?

And in the same feature, Ryanair state there is no "automatic" right to this because of the circumstances.......

Bargain - Reasonable costs are similar for most policies.

Effectively a roof and a bed in a "Days Inn" type of hotel is reasonable - a suite in the Ritz is not. Fish and chips is reasonable - Caviar & lobster is not.

Ryanair & no automatic right??? what were you asking? Care (assuming you are traveling to/from EU destination and re-schedule/refund = you have a right to. .

  • Is anyone else dealing with holiday gems ?? They are refusing us a refund over the phone and will not put this in writing apart from offering us a small amount as an ex-gratia payment (think not !!!) Its really frustrating and have no idea what to do next

Don't give up. I was on hold to Expedia yesterday for an hour and got through and was offered a full refund straight away. Packaged deals - parts will be refunded straight away but the flight cost will take between 2 to 12 weeks though - depending upon the airline in question. Good luck.

Thats good news. My flight is meant to leave Gatwick tomorrow, and can't see it happening. I'll try phoning them now.

Is there anyway to apply for a refund other than on the phone?

If you have travel insurance (and you should) call them - not only may they pay but they have advice and assistance services that can advise.

Same with Expedia claims, call your insurers, they can help (if they are half decent!).
