    Oh dear!

They will not be happy bunnies, as I've spoke to their insurer (Insure & Go) and they will not pay for accomodation/meals.

Does the fact that the outbound flight was from Manchester make Continental airlines resposible?

    Yeah you can.

Iceland - Arguably the worlds most pointless nation after Wales.

    OMG! How ignorant!
  • So I have a booking to travel to NYC from Manchester on Saturday (Continental) booked through expedia, which includes an 'Expedia Special Rate' hotel stated as non-refundable, which although not booked simutaneously, appear as part of the same itinerary when I log into expedia's website.

Am I right in thinking that if the flight does not go ahead, that I will still NOT be entitled to any refund on my hotel?

+++ Oh and what are Expedia playing at? Their last update on this chaos was 16 April !!!
It's not personal, It's strictly business.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 1530

The volcanic eruption has reduced and the volcano is not currently emitting ash to altitudes that will affect the UK. Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions we are now looking at a continuously improving situation.
Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday.
From 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday, Scottish airspace will be open, and south to a line between Teesside and Blackpool. Mainland Scottish airports will be open.
This is a dynamic and changing situation and is therefore difficult to forecast beyond 0700 local; however, the latest Met Office advice is that the contaminated area will continue to move south with the possibility that restrictions to airspace above England and Wales, including the London area, may be lifted later tomorrow (Tuesday).
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements in line with that. We will advise further arrangements at approximately 2100 (local time), today.
It is now for airports and airlines to decide how best to utilise this opportunity. Passengers should contact their airlines to find out how this will affect their travel plans.

You can spend your time alone re digesting past regrets,
Or you can come to terms and realize you're the only one who can forgive yourself.
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

Some Insurers ARE covering - Spoke to Claim Settlement Agencies about an hour ago - some of their policies are covering "Ash Delays" some are not.

Cityboy - I am always the "Eeyore" (seeing the gloomy side) What concerns me is the word "cancellation". In the terms that you are seeing - I can see that they would argue that this is aimed at canceled flights BY THE AIR CARRIER! - as this is being considered an Act of God by some, I think legal blame cannot be placed on the Cariiers, and also bearing in mind the decision to cancel was the Government, not theirs.

I'm not saying you are wrong but as many insurers are saying no - I'm just passing on info to prepare people. If you can imagine how many this affects - all these claims could put many IC's out of business.

I hope everyone who is "trapped" gets home soon and ALL the IC's pay out fairly and quickly - Good luck to you all - Last advice try the British Embassy or Consulate where you are if you need further assistance or are running low on money etc.

From ABI (Association of Brtish Insurers) site:

Travel disruption due to Volcanic dust cloud – advice from the ABI

People travelling to or from a UK airport are having their travel plans disrupted due to an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland. The ABI advises customers who may be affected that:
    • Volcanic eruptions are not always covered by travel insurance for cancellation and delay. However, some policies will cover this, so you should contact your travel insurance company to check what your policy covers.
    • If your flight is cancelled, most airlines will offer you either a full refund or an alternative flight.
    • If your flight is cancelled and you do not travel, most travel insurers will refund your premium if you took out a single trip policy.
    • If you accept an alternative flight at a later date, most travel insurers will amend your policy to cover your new travel arrangements and dates.
    • Insurance only covers events that happen after the policy is taken out so customers taking out travel insurance from today onwards will not be covered for this event.
    • Deciding that you no longer wish to travel will not be covered by your travel insurance policy.

Nick Starling, the ABI’s Director of General Insurance and Health, said:
“Travel insurance policies will differ in this situation; there is no standard set of conditions which applies to a situation of this kind. Therefore customers should check their travel insurance policy, and speak to their travel insurer to understand what their individual policy covers them for in this situation.”

Cityboy - BUT the LEGAL defination of cancellation is that the Air Carrier (in this case) cancels - The legal defination (in this case) is GROUNDED not CANCELLED!

  • Apologies if this has already been asked, I've got limited internet access time wise.
    Our problem is.....
Currently in Miami. Return flights from Newcastle(UK) to Paris then Paris to Miami both with Air France.
Due to return leaving Miami tomorrow(Tuesday), at 1740hrs local time. The same flight leaving today has just changed and instead of flying to Paris is now flying to Marseille.
If airspace opens tomorrow over France and UK then our problem is hopefully resolved but if not my question is....do we have to accept the flight to Marseille without any connecting flight to Newcastle? Want to go home but to be honest I'd rather be stranded here than Marseille with the kids.
    Thanks.
