My daughter is off to aberystwyth this year (fingers crossed) to do a maths and secondary education degree and I have already been collectting odds and ends for her from cutlery to a washing hamper.
She will only about 80 miles from home.
Her nanna owns a corner shop so she has warned her she will be down for a big shop before she leaves and that she will do top up shopping there on return trips.:D0 -
Im in my final year at uni, he will have a great time:beer:
My first year my mum took me out for the day to get ready for uni:
A trip to ikea -bedding, kitchen basics etc
A trip to Morrisons/costco- stock up on food - especially tinned rubbish like beans-was a life saver
A trip to WH Smiths -Note pads ,pens (everything that i hadnt already liberated from my part time job -was never short a pen lol)
A trip to the bank - sort out new student account -also my mammy took all details as i was moving away from home, so she could put cash into my account if needs be.0 -
This has all been said, prob, but
Two sets of bedding
Sleeping bag for kipping on mates' floors
Help with money management, explain the stuff about credit cards and overdrafts
Phone credit
You can get supermarket cards to charge up with money for shopping
Wallet with emergency tenner in
A4 paper and biros
Pen drive/s
Dressing gown/towels
Rucksack/bag
Mugs/teaspoons/crockery and cutlery if needed
mirror for bedroom
railcard
toiletries and washing tablets/change for launderette
and I may be behind the times but we needed about a million passport photos on the first day.
Exciting times! Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -

Hi
What I've learned over the years (my youngest is in the process of finishing his masters this year) is to make sure they know how to cook the basics, how to go to a doctors/chemist to ask for help if they have a bad cold (my eldest and all the others in the shared house in the first year had the same flu type bug and not one of them thought to go to the chemist until a parent pointed it out)
Oh and you try to keep a small emergency fund that they don't know about because you are going to need it some time in the next 3 years.

Rosalie...thanks for the reassurance, it's Warwick that my son's hoping to go to and if he gets it the way he wants he'll be there for 4 years doing a Maths master. I've been with him on a vist and the place seemed nice, and the halls he wants do the let that allows them to leave their stuff their over the holidays (tho I have got a new bigger car lol)0

OOOh I forgot the all-important corkscrew!!
And when my bro and I went, mum got a hardback notebook and wrote recipes for the meals we liked, she asked us which recipes we wanted and she wrote those in. This was a frightening 21 years ago for me and I still have the book full of recipes I have added. I think DB still has his.
Also, what about plasters/paracetamol/antihistamine in a little kit? Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -
This is more or less what DS1 took....
Bedding
Towels
Tea towels
cleaning materials
washing tabs & colour catcher sheets
dustpan and brush (as you have to hire hoovers from the office where DS is in halls)
Laptop/printer/laptop bag
stationery
camera
cookery books
document wallet
chopping board & sharp knives
colander
frying pan/wok/large pan for pasta/rice/stew
small microwave saucepans for beans etc
utensils/tin opener/corkscrew
Clothes/shoes/sports kit (he's doing a sport related degree)
backpack & holdall
tupperware
mixing bowl/measuring jug
toiletries
sewing kit
iron
basic meds (antihistamines/immodium/paracetamol/plasters)
vitamins
store cupboard foods
plastic cups/mugs/plates/bowls
baking tray and roasting dish
cutlery
alarm clock
coat hangers
desk lamp
Laundry bag
Fabreeze
teddy (he got sneaked in when DS wasn't looking)
As I said the majority of his stuff came from Wilkinsons/Tesco and some of it was contributed by friends and relatives but it was all done on the cheap as we have to live on a fairly tight budget.Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game0 -
Ciderwithrose, i'm going to have to hire a van....lol.....:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:My list has now become sooooo long. Loved the idea of the teddy.:)
Thanks for the list:A, it is greatly appreciated. Love BTx0 -
Do bear in mind that there will be shops fairly near and so you dont need to send him off with tonnes of things, especially as the room in halls wont be massive!
Think I took the least stuff in my first year and have slowly accumulated more and more cr^p!0
