  • Hi

I can't add the link in but if you google 'The Student Room', it has loads of information on there for uni students and their parents about what to take, etc.

It can be a bit irritating to navigate around but it's got mountains of useful info.

    - Supernoodles
    - Washing powder
    - Condoms

Thats pretty much it to be prepared anyway.

In all seriousness things need to be considered:

    - Student Loan, he should have applied already
    - Accommodation
    - Term dates so he knows when he's off etc. different unis have different start / xmas / easter times
    - Bank account (free student stuff)

We had ( put together by the readers of MSE ) a huge list a couple of years ago.
( when my eldest started uni)
I remember a popular inclusion was coat hangers!

passport photos - probably needed for various ID cards - machines at uni will be expensive and have long queues

laptop security kit - chain it to the radiator

some tupperware-style boxes for keeping everything in, including food in a shared fridge

sometimes blue-tack is not allowed on walls but white-tack is

mugs, teabags, instant coffee, small kettle - if allowed in room

    alarm clock
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Good luck to your son from a fellow student to be! :)
  • Get a HC1 form for him to claim free prescriptions, dentistry etc. This is the phone number to ring to get one sent to you. 0845 610 1112 You can't download it. Make sure he fills it in in term time when he has rent to pay etc.

My son filled it in and has a certificate for free dentistry prescriptions etc. Talking to two of my friends yesterday I found out their teenagers at uni had been paying for all their prescriptions. No-one they had asked had known or told them about the HC1 form for reduced or free prescriptions/dentistry if you are on a low income.
  • my mum insisted i take

    hundreds of tea bags
    big box of biscuits
    big bottle of vodka

to halls in order to make friends. i thought she was a bit potty but it worked! :)

This is a list complied by students and it's pretty detailed!

I honestly think the most helpful thing to do is go to a supermarket on moving in day and get a big shop. To get things like cleaning products and basic cupboard stocks.
