Just found this here

It's a guide to settting up a Netgear router but the theory is the same. My apologies about the password needing to be more than 8 characters, this appears to suggest it must be no longer than 8 characters (can you tell I don't use AOL!

Very important:

• You must type the Screen Name in lower case
• Your Screen Name must not contain any spaces
• You must add @aol.com after the AOL Screen Name
• The Screen Name must have General (18+) Parental Controls access (not Mature Teen, Young Teen or Kids Only)
• The password cannot be longer than eight characters long
• The password must consist of letters and numbers only (i.e. no spaces or special characters such as: ! £ ? or %)
• The password must be all lower case
We recommend that you create a new Screen Name which your router can use to connect to AOL - because if you use an existing Screen Name, your router will lose its connection to AOL if you sign on from another location using that same Screen Name.
You can create a new Screen Name at AOL Keyword: Names. Please use the above guidelines when creating your new Screen Name.
If you'd prefer to use an existing Screen Name, make sure the password follows the above guidelines - if necessary, you can change the password by signing on to AOL with that Screen Name and going to AOL Keyword: Password.

Glad it worked. No idea about the AOL account though I'm afraid, I don't use it

To protect your wireless connection you will need to enable the security on the wireless router.

Albertross did a cracking guide here, it's a different router but the theory is the same. Basically, Disable SSID broadcast, turn on encryption and use MAC address filtering. Try it and shout if you get problems.
