I received letter two weeks ago and worried, about it probably without reason. I read comments here which are so useful and decided to call the normal number.

I did this last night and spoke to a very helpful lady, I didnt mention the letter and neither did she.

She said all was okay, so I guess I've renewed... The only thing that was different to last year was she asked me to provide passwords on the account. So she created some to use each time I call (which will be once a year). She also ask me if I minded them doing an ID vertification with Equifax, which was not a problem. I did ask why and she advised it is a standard thing now, has this happened to anybody else?

She said I passed the check which was good....

Thats sounds really odd why they'd want to check your credit file to verify you.Never heard of that within the Inland revenue, thats something that loans, etc check not benefit agency's normally. All odd if you ask me!

I finally got my renewal pack today and called through to the specialist renewal team. It was exactly the same as renewing on the main number. I decided to use the specialist team, as in the past week I have grown much more confident it is legit and didn't want any delay in finalising the award. I would like to thank evryone who has posted their thoughts as it certainly made me feel like I wasn't alone in thinking the letter was a bit strange. :)
    Mortgage Feb 2015 £178,500 END 2043!!

    MFW 2015 £100 /£1000

Watch this space, my MF end date will tumble!!
  • I received the letter today, and thought it was strange. I called them and they was interested in my childcare details, i said i will call back.
I then called the main t.c renewal office after about ten minutes she said that yes the letter is genuine and it's a dept that has been set up to deal with ppl that have very large annual awards.
After going to check if she could take my info she came back and said to carry on.
I am worried thou as last year when i renewed they just said am i still using childcare, but not have i changed provider. Which i had done so now my childcare details are incorrect. am so scared im in trouble but i do still use registered help.
  • how where the 400,000 people chosen for this way of renewing?
  • has anyone who renewed on the specialist line received their payments as usual or got a letter to say they had to provide more info to tax credits?

HMRC have now issued some guidance on their website - not a lot but it might put your mind at rest hmrc.gov.uk/news

As always HMRC have thought things through properly before changing things - NOT!
