looks lovely floss!!
before i started making cakes i always thought...how can anyone charge so much for a cake....but after making them myself i can see why (not how they cost thousands) but they are SOOO time consuming, the ingredients really mount up, especially with icing etc, and the amount of work involved is unbelievable! ive been up till 2am sometimes finishing christening cakes off!

I want a croque en bouche (sp?) but DF isn't taken with the idea. Apparently it doesn't look like a cake so we're not having it *sigh*
So now back to the drawing board. My wonderful sister and her hubby are giving us £500 for a cake (I can't imagine we will spend all of that on a cake!) but it means we can really splash out if we want to.:D

As money is not an issue why don't you have a traditional English cake AND a traditional French one as a celebration of the marriage of two nationalities? When my friend got married to Swede they had two cakes and all the guests got to see (and taste) the two traditions - they proved a real talking point. I think that as you have dreamed of the croque en bouche since your teens you will really regret not having one if you don't.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

He really is an artist. We couldn't afford one of his cakes but if anyone out there is doing a really big budget wedding you should talk to him. For everyone else like me, just enjoy the photos.
Check out the occasion cakes as well as the wedding cakes - some of them are soooo cool! Wouldn't want to cut them lol.
These are amazing cakes - I have bookmarked the page for future reference as we have three adult children who might get married one day and it is our 30th wedding anniversary next year. Mind you I'd better get saving now!“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

just a quick note if your having fruit on the top of the lovely moist chocolate and beetroot cake be careful with how you put them out the fruit being heavier might make the middle layer sink if your planning on putting them on top of each other (believe me i know, it happened to one of my friends). you might be better putting it on a 3 tier cake stand instead.... something like this

Yep I had the same thought, we're planning on hiring an 'S' shaped stand to put the cake layers on as the fruit cake will prob be a fair bit heavier than the beetroot and chocolate cake.
Sounds like I'd better make some chocolate cupcakes then!

No one show my hubby those profiterole towers please - he'd insist on getting married again to have one of those - he's profiterole obsessed.
My brother's then-girlfriend agreed to make mine - left her to it pretty much but we had three tiers of sponge (Vanilla, Lemon and Chocolate - I never saw the Chocolate since it got devoured), marshmallow scented fondant icing, and purple ribbon around each tier.
Of course we then had a mini drama since brother decided to "dump" girlfriend (in the most half-hearted manner going - they still did exactly the same amount of stuff together as when they were seeing each other) so we weren't 100% sure if she'd still do the cake.
Thankfully had a spare one lined up by the caterer's wife which we'd intended to go home with us for those at work etc who couldn't make the big day (and my brownie pack) - since we got married so far away... that was going to be our plan B... so we ended up with a proper tiered cake, plus the most amazingly lush fruit cake with fondant us-es on the top - she'd even got hold of a picture of my wedding dress and made the fondant me in exactly the same dress - down to the roses on the side of it and stuff... it was utterly amazing. I'm sure if I'd asked she'd have added a three-legged black and white cat to it to achieve perfection... a friend did have her cat added to her Fimo cake topper - so it was her, hubby and moggie.
Of course what they don't tell you is how hard it is to either eat, dismember or throw away, a cake "you"!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
My mum made mine for me. She'd never made a wedding cake before, but went to decorating classes and did an amazing job.
I had 3 tier 3 flavour (fruit, chocolate and vanilla), and it had sugarcraft purple butterflies flying up and around the cake, purple and silver ribbon and a cake fountain on top with wire and butterfies. It was amazing, and exactly what I would have asked for if i'd asked a professional to do it.
This is it, but not a great photo:
