Oh yes you are. - Ok I will rephrase that. Some children with ASD are eligible. I know kids who are very high functioning that recieve it.

Not everyone is 'at it' most people are too busy working to screw the system. It takes time and energy but if you have all day why not.

High functioning does not always mean less need.

My middle son again, he is high functioning and in his earlier days, was much more work and had greater needs than his more complex and severe brother..purely because he was high functioning and battling against his ASD. We experienced (and still do on occasion) high levels of violence and aggression and it was so stressful and his needs so great, it forced me into a complete mental breakdown in 2005.

Once we got him into the right education enviroment and he matured a little to understand a little more about what was wrong with him complete with some extra therapies that started to work, he made improvements enough to no longer be eligible for DLA.

He is still very stressful at times, can still become very violent and aggressive (he is going through a stage right now hence some of my wobbyless last night) and does still require a great deal of 'work' but not, in my own opinion, enough to warrant payment of DLA...his 'better' periods outweigh the 'eek' ones.

My more complex and severe younger son however, was easier to deal with, caused less stress, mainly because he was completely in his own little world, now however, he needs an awful lot of support and help, complicated by his other problems.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Plenty of countries (Saudia, North Korea) have extreme punishments for crimes and yet people still offend and reoffend. There is no magic wand, it requires both carrot and stick.

Don't think many pickpockets re offend after they have cut their hands off.

Before anyone starts jumping up and down, this isn't directed at anyone in particular and is merely an observation.

I've just been noseying in the benefits forum and then read this thread and something struck me. Are we becoming a nation of inbreds in this country or is it just my imagination? It doesn't seem to matter what site you go on; if they've got a forum it won't be long til you find a thread about kids and 90% of the posts will be from people talking about the huge raft of disabilities their offspring have got.

No-one seems to have normal healthy kids anymore, they've got to have some disability that can be 'bragged' about to whoever will listen. Is everyone going round shagging their brother/sister/mother/father or what? I've never known anything like it. When I was a kid I knew of one family that had a disabled girl; everyone else in the area was just normal. Nowadays you have a hard time finding a kid that doesn't have some sort of disability. !!!!!! is going on?

its the americanisation of people. they all have to have "issues" these days. yeah, there are a few genuinely disabled kids, we actually had none in my school, but nowadays you have ritalin for the ADD (or whatever it is) kids - in my day, these kids were "naughty" - now they are drugged up zombies. Now you have dyslexia - those were the "thick" kids.

Sooner of later they will come up with a disability for the fat kids and the less populer kids. remember NOTHING is your fault - you are perfect, the perfect sportsman, the perfect academic - and if you don't show this ability it is society and maggie thatcher who is too blame.

Perhaps so but you can't deny it isn't true. Just go and take a look around the forums - especially threads about kids - and you'll see for yourself.

The way some of them go on, it's like they want some kind of medal. "Ooh look at me and my dyslexic/autistic/Aspergers kid" Personally I see no reason to mention any disabilities your offspring/family has unless the topic is specifically about that.
