At some point responsibility is going to have to come back in a big way as the culture of "it's not my fault",

Responsibility will never return. Always the council have a duty to the innocent child - keep in mind you may have been born an innocent child into a chaotic household and you would want the state to do it's best to take care of your needs.

Because of this welfare will keep on growing.

The only answer I can think of is we all should get say £10k pa benefits and then its up to us if we want to work and add to this sum.

Some very unpleasant posts on here.

    However, truly shocking OP.

I really hate to agree with either The White Horse, or The Telegraph (though I did warm to the Telegraph after its expenses expose), but it is just absolutely shocking and wrong that we are incentivising people to live in this way, off the rest of us.

Even if we could amply afford it, to encourage people to be that lazy would be dubious; but at a point when we as a country face record deficits and a yawning chasm in our budgets, it's just incomprehensible.

    Quite sick.

still not as much as mps have claimed in dubious expenses "within the letter of the law" (or do this family have a moat and a duck houses?) and tax avoidance not to mention evasion is a much bigger issue imho.

at least these kids have a chance to grow up decent.

I don't have a problem with people getting benefits to cover food costs but when its cars, holidays, tvs, Sky etc then I think that takes the mickey. If we don't have enough spare then we don't go on holiday, we don't have Sky because the money is better spent elsewhere. I remember reading about something called a Means Test (in the 1910's I think?) where before you got any money they would check your house, if 5 people lived there you were allowed 5 chairs, plates, knives, forks etc. Anything else over what you needed was considered unnecessary and you were expected to sell it before you got poor relief money. Pretty harsh but it does get more attractive the more I read about scroungers.....

it's worth noting that even though benefits have risen birth rates have fallen. there really aren't that many families like this in the country (the average number of children a woman has is something like 1.7 now i think).

But what are the figures for, say people who have never worked/the unemployed, and what if you exclude those with 0, how many are doing the breeding. All around me I see people declaring they have 3-6 kids, this isn't something I used to hear in years gone by. Years ago, in my school, I guess there was probably one family per 150 kids who had more than 2, now it seems to be most of them.

I don't know how much extra they get for popping out one more (ignoring any extra rent/council tax etc that might be needed), but I am not aware that it decreases.... what if they got £60 for the first one, then £15/week less for each subsequent one, so by the time you're up to 4 you're getting £60 + £45 + £30 + £15. Let them wear hand me downs like we used to.... even 60+45+30+15 is £7800 tax free per year (£650/month).

Before all the whacky WTC/CTC etc etc was invented you'd get family allowance of about £10/week and that'd be it.

blimey you're generous. the amounts are nowhere near this.

there are a few things that don't add up in this story. i don't think you can support that many kids and run two cars on 42k. what size house are they living in for 87 quid a week? is there some sort of cash in hand going on too?

    :D

I take it that quote relates to me. You know you were wrong - Just swallow it and shut it. If you think you were right please put the pictures back. After all people need to see this reality don't they??

    Sorry.

I don't think I am wrong at all & it makes no odds to take it down or put it up.

But as you said if I don't think its wrong put it back up.

    So its gone back up.

Now swallow it & shut the !!!! up.

Ive read this thread fro start to finish and Im confused. 1984 Returns for real can you clarify your view regarding the family concerned in the OP,s link?.

Are you saying that they deserve the amount in benefits? or that they are entitled? which they clearly are given the rules of the system. There are two issues IMO.

My view is that people who have no intention of working ,like the family concerned relying on the benefits system should be made to work for the Local Council, thats what happends in Spain. If your out of work and sign on you have to work so many hours per week/month for the Town Hall. This may be white-washing buildings, cleaning the streets etc.

There should be NO free ride. EDIT: We should only subsidise the first 2 children (child benefit) if you want more children then you should pay for them.
