Let us know how you got on with the maggots. You have my sympathies - my wheelie bin had them over the weekend, so I did the boiling water thing. They are vile, but they won't actually hurt you!

Sorry to disagree but maggots can indeed climb walls if they want to I have seen them climb up to a height of maybe 2 or 3 feet......

had exactly the same last week :) not helped by the fact that our bins only get emptied every two weeks (anyone else have the same problem?)
OH fishes so I'm not hugely squirmish with them anymore although I used to be ;) I sprayed them with some kitchen cleaner with bleach in it... seemed to have done the job ;)

Maggots don't have legs or feet though! They are simply a larvae! I'm a keen fisherman and use maggots alot and they can't even climb out of my bait box where they ony have an inch to freedom.

I've seen grubs very similar to maggots before which can indeed climb. Could it be these you have seen?

This link is a pic of maggots so don't click if you are squeamish! ;)

Why is it always us that find the maggots - my husband used to fish and although he assures me he never put them in his mouth - he doesn't mind them. We have had maggots in our bins twice in 18 years and who found them both times - yeah me. I feel like gipping just thinking about them.

He has dealt with them, he swills the bin out with water down a manhole, obviously only when the bin is empty of all , but maggots!

If you rang your council and pretended that they hadn't collected last bin day would they deal with your rubbish at once.

Same as me. I used to date someone who worked at the maggot farm his Dad owned:D . I once went with him in his lorry full of maggots to Germany as that is where they sold a lot of to:D . Ex bf would even put them on himself if he had a cut for them to eat the debris:D . Since they were his livlihood I don't have any tips about destroying them for you, though I would guess all the things suggested so far would work. Good Luck

SouthernScouser I have no idea how maggots climb walls but I assure you they do.... last summer my daughters neighbour went on holiday leaving her maggot infested bins by her front door and not only did they climb up from the bottom of her straight sided wheely bin they then proceeded to climb up her front door to letterbox height... the whole of her front door was covered in maggots, my son in law had to hose them down but even so some got under the door into her hallway.... It was disgusting and gave me nightmares...
Never seen anything like it in my life, but they do frequently crawl to the top of peoples wheely bins even though there is only a small amount of rubbish in them.... HOW DO THEY DO THAT ?

OP - A good argument for not rigidly delegating household tasks. :)

I ALWAYS empty the bin before being away even one night, after being away for 2 days and coming back to a rustling noise in the kitchen...

they were def a couple of feet up the wall in my garden and i saw them climb up the steps - they can def climb, much quicker than i thought they would be able to!!!
    EWWWWW

when i got home the ones which were all over the bin bags and patio were gone - obviously washed away or eaten by birds!! i was relieved to find them all gone!

so i quadruple bagged all my rubbish sacks and in the black plastic bin there were loads!! i couldnt face getting the one bag out that was in there with them wriggling everywhere so i poured in a bottle of bleach and 5 kettles of boiling water - so they def must all be cooked (they smell DISGUSTING!!) yuck yuck yuck so i have put the lid back on and tied it shut - so nothing can get in or out and have left it for the time being until i feel brave enough to empty it down the drain!!!!
