Personally I hate maggots - my mother on the other hand admires them greatly. She is a specialist for wound management and tissue viability and often uses maggots to clean up infected wounds, so the b/f was spot on with using them
OF course the ones that are used are bred for this purpose so I def wouldn't recommend using ones you find on your rubbish!
Glad you got them bagged up loopy lou - I would suggest perhaps a daily spray with some fly killer until the bins are collected (just in case)

Just a quick post on the whole water ban and cleaning the patio - I am temping for a large water company at the moment, and you are allowed to use your pressure washer on the patio, if it is deemed as being used for health and safety reasons - this would count as one, so go ahead!Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.I married Moon 8/4/2011, baby boy born 26/9/2012, Angel Baby Poppy born 8/11/15, Rainbow baby boy born 11/2/20170

we took delivery of our brown/blue bins 2 weeks ago so they will be collected this wednesday. I have been as careful as I can and wrapped as must into newspaper, but aghast, disgust this morning when I open the lid to see it crawling with maggots. I however chucked some crawaling inset powder around the bin and then left the lid open hoping direct sunlight might kill them. Had to then take kids to school. 15 mins later on my return the little !!!!!!s had crawled all the way down my drive (fast arn't they) and I think a couple got squished under my car wheels. What is the best way to prevent them. I am gonna pick up some jeyes today and some fly killer and spray that each morning and see if that helps. Any advise guys, I HATE MAGGOTS0

Our Brown bins , for food waste are excellent and when properly closed and handle in the up position they are effectively locked , no flies can get in and hence I have not yet had any maggots, which I used to get all the time before we got the brown bins... you are doing the right thing by wrapping up food waste but you must make sure that the lids are on the bins properly so no flies can get in... if they don't lock down then I guess you are fighting a losing battle as no matter how well wrapped, if flies can get in the bins you will get maggots in this warm weather... only other thing is regularly spray inside the bins with fly spray.....
We are lucky as our bins are emptied every week but my daughter has the same problem as you and they only empty every two weeks

I have had no further problem with maggots since I did the following -
1. Rigorously ensure NO food is ever left uncovered - especially pet food. After the pet has finished eating either cover the dish or take it up altogether. As I never left any other food uncovered I now believe my problem was caused by thrown away cat food which had been in her dish uncovered. I never once ever saw any flies round her dish though.
2. After the bin was emptied I used Jeyes fluid and gave it a really good clean, inside and out. Then I lined the bin with a wheelie bin liner (can be got cheaply at markets).
3. Double bag all bin bags from the house.

I flush any non compostable food waste down the toilet if we have any. It doesn't happen often, we eat most stuff and compost everything we can. The thought of having it festering in a bin is gross, bleuchhh!
I used to live in the tropics, where our bins were perpetually crawling with maggots - ghastly!Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0 -

Our bin is collected every fornight and have an ongoing problem with maggots. Now, I use little bin bags which are tied up and then put into a large black bag before eventually going in the bin. It seems to work but resent doing it for the environmental issue of using so much plastic (doesn't wrapping in paper just disintegrate once it hits moisture?). I thought last week as the weather is cooler that I would get waya with just single bagging but nope - along came the critters. They get under the lid.
Personally, as much as I am pro recycling etc, I am fed with the council's attitude to waste management. We now have four bins/bags for various waste - green bin for card and garden cuttings, small green for cans etc, green bags for paper and regular bin. On top of that, any PET plastic has to be taken to special sites. I need a bigger house just to make space for all the separate stuff which then hangs around for fortnightly collection or till I can get to a special site!!0 -
