the birds are not interested in them as they were still wiggling on my drive. Look again this morning and still active in bin. The lid is closed properly but they can still wiggle out under the lip. The worst thing is I was eatign some rice last night and got put off as for some reason the rice reminded me of something!!!!
Just hosed down the drive into the drains and hosed down the outside of the brown bin and gave a liberal dusting of crawling insect powder inside the bin. YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCk
oh btw does anyone know whether you can use biodrgrageable carrier bags in the brown bin?0 -
I've been showing this thread to some friends in Australia, and they're gobsmacked at the idea of fortnightly collections. Their recycling attitude over here is also way ahead of ours in the UK.
I'd say don't deal with the maggots, deal with the council.
It's them that need to know their fortnightly collection is unsanitary and downright unpleasant. As for the maggots, I wonder how they'd enjoy a new home on the town hall steps.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Are you in Oz yet Softstuff?
Our rubbish collection is every week but our recycling collection is every fortnight. We aren't allowed to put any foodscaps in the recycling bin so have never had a maggot problem. Even the normal bin I've never had maggots. We don't have much food scraps, usually from vegetable peel but it gets well wrapped in newspaper.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -

I have had fortnightly collections for years. And never had any problems with maggots.
I have a compost heap for veggie peelings.
All other rubbish goes in the black wheelie bin I use carrier bags for most of my rubbish. I don't throw out a lot of food waste as I compost as much as I can.
You do need to make sure that your bin lid fits really well and you don't leave it with the lid open. And it should be fine.
This week the bin did not go out and it does smell a bit but it will have to wait unless I can hook the bags out and take them down the tip.
And I never clean my bin out either but then I just don't tip rubbish/food waste with out it being wrapped first.

hi ... no its not a wheelie bin i did have a wheelie bin in Cornwall and can say i never ever got maggots in it!!!!
This is a normal black bin with a lid on it, the refuse collection is once a week! and yes i do clean it out! ive tried bleach scolding hot water etc ...so now looking for other ideas!!Hoping to be a thinner me in 2010!0 -
Do you have cat or dog food which you leave out for the pet, but then put the leftovers in the bin? If so chances are that flies have laid eggs in the food whilst it was available to the pet. I am surprised that they would get to maggot stage so quickly though.0
