Not long ago you created a whole thread about a facial expression of David Cameron when talking about gay rights or something. A simple facial expression which upset no one and caused no offence had you scoffing about the toffs, the nasty party, the no compassion party etc. Yet this leaflet, which HAS caused upset and offence.... well thats absolutely fine?

i have to say i don't remember making a whole thread about a facial expression of david cameron. i do remember highlighting an interview with attitude magazine in which he stated that members of the conservative party who had supported the homophobic legislation of their counterparts in latvia should have been free to do so as it should be a 'conscience vote', then he realised he's put his foot in it and tried to backtrack. cameron also has a poor voting record on gay equality.

i wouldn't worry about it - it's only that Devon chap making stuff up trying to discredit your point.

he does this to whoever knocks the beloved tory party.

by definition if you're not a tory or think like he does you're the total opposite.
    strange but very true

Or maybe it's because they didn't want to be reminded of having cancer....

You fail to see/accept that the subject matter is different from direct targeting yacht insurance to people interested in yachts.

If a member of your family was stabbed to death, would you feel upset if the Conservative party obtained names of violent crime victims and sent you a flyer, addressed to you personally, suggesting that they were tougher on knife crime than Labour?

no i wouldn't mind actually. i'm always pleased to have political material through my door (even conservative) and it would show that they thought it was an important enough issue to campaign about.

if you have cancer you don't have to be reminded about it. it is on your mind pretty constantly.

cancer charities also target cancer sufferers and relatives. when my uncle died from cancer we had a cancer charity hovering around after the funeral service collecting donations which to my mind is a real invasion. my aunt was really upset as she felt they'd done nothing to help my uncle.

But how about if the flyer said that it was the Labour government who had caused the stabbing? This is why the cancer campaign is so nasty - it's not the targeting per se, it's the targeting, with lies, of people who are vulnerable to those lies.

i don't think the labour campaign says the conservatives have caused cancer or will cause cancer.

I dithered over posting this, but felt better over this post,...so..

My husband's aunt has cancer right now. Despit her ging to the gp a lot with concerns about her cancer having recurred the GP didn't see need to test, then when did, didn't see the need to hurry. It transpires they knew she had abnormal cells sometime before Christmas. :( . She was widowed last year, and what se is primarily thinking about is not the cancer (in fact the stress/worry was worse before treatment started she says) but her daughter, who is not yet recovered fro the loss of her father, then his father, and is now seeing her mother go through this.

Politics (lifelong socialist) is really at the very, very bottom of her list of what to worry about. She did take time to write to her GP begging them not to be so tardy with future patients. I don't really fully understand the stage/grades, but she is Stage 3 Grade 3.

Between treatments she astounds us keeping busy. She's helping her daughter sort through the belongings of her father and grandfather.

Before Christmas, living alone fr he first time in her life, she asked my husband to move in with her during the week. He's always been very close with this aunt, not least as she picked up the pieces when HIS mother died when he was a teen.

Its not the cancer so much that she's worrying about, its her daughter. Its that her daughter might one day face the same circumstance. It is my very great relief she has not received this, but I can tell you, after talking to her about this today, she is upset enough about the story...and she is a labour supporter. Now, if this were a generalised mail shot, I think she would be upset to receive it too, and I don' think that the arguments should not be given to the public, but I think there are sensitive ways and insensitive ways. Just as I don't think collecting outside a funeral uninvited is tactful, to mail shot women worrying about what their daughters might have inherited medically and what they might ay for with their health in a political outcome they cannot control while they fight this disease...its not helpful and its not tactful.

TBH, I also think voting is pretty low on her list of ''must do''s ATM.

okay - how about "it's thanks to Labour's early release scheme that I'll never see my brutally murdered daughter on her wedding day". or something similar. To be fair, Ninky, I was actually trying to support the position I thought you were taking....

I think what is so sad is that I'm sure Labour has achieved things over the years that they could be using to crow about in their campaigns which wouldn't upset people. I have to say that some posters views on this subject are strangely detatched. There is a very good ad running on TV at the moment by Macmillan Nurses saying "Today was a good day, today wasn't all about cancer" because the truth is for my mum we are keeping her busy and doing nice days out and little treats so she can put whats coming to the back of her thoughts and enjoy what is happening here and now. To have leaflets like this seems just so insensitive - and why do they post it through your door? To get your vote. Well to my mind that isn't a good enough reason to upset anyone no matter what % it is that are cancer patients who receive them in the random postings.

Labour 'targets' voters with election material.

    Shock, horror, probe, yawn.
