Now back in London (South). Any advice on berry-picking places welcome, thanks for the couple of suggestions over the past week or so.

You could try along the Ravensbourne river walk between Sainsburys at Bell Green and Catford. Was always a good stretch for blackberries. This year I have only picked those on my allotment and they appeared much earlier than normal and have just about finished now.

Hi I have read this whole thread and am still non the wiser...I never seem able to find what I am looking for !? I would like to make some puddings with the blackberrys my kids have picked today. A crumble and some sort of sponge type pud. Would I be best cooking the berrys with some sugar first or just popping crumble on top and cooking, for the sponge I was going to do a symilar thing? thanks in advance :-))

I'm making pies and crumbles today with the blackberries and apples I've got, have stewed them first and added some sugar, will then put some in a dish with crumble mix on top and cook.

Have just been browsing through Good Food, and they have a steamed sponge pudding with mixed berries, the recipe says uncooked berries in the bowl and then sponge mix on top, then when you serve it pour some stewed berries over it as well.

Just waiting for my mix to cool down a bit as want to freeze a few pies uncooked, and freeze some of the portions of stewed fruit so I can just use them however I want over the winter.

I went Blackberry picking this morning. I loved it, however I am nursing some nettle stings. I was planning on making Blackberry Pie, however after seeing LameWolf's recipe for Blackberry Jam, I decided to make that. I have never made Jam before, I think it's gone ok, I did the wrinkle test, and I hope it's set. Got some soda bread in the house, so will toast that and have with jam for breakfast, yum yum. I am totally into this foraging thing now. I live in North Wales, what grows wild this time of year, and does anybody know of any spots where I can find wild produce in my area. I am going to go blackberry picking again next weekend, and hope to have enough to make my Blackberry pie and some Blackberry gin for Christmas.

I made this from the ivillage site a couple of weeks ago. Its soooooo scrummy! But double up as it doesn't make much - a small tub. If you love greek yogurt - you will love it - its really creamy. But you will need to leave it for about 10 mins before serving to get it creamy tasting or a quick blast in the microwave (as we can never wait 10 mins!!! :D ). This is just copied from the site (so thanks to ivillage  )

    Blackberry Yoghurt Ice Cream

    Prep time: 25 minutes
    Freezing time: 6-8 hours

    Ingredients
    300g fresh blackberries
    100g caster sugar
    100ml water
    200ml tub Greek yoghurt
    150ml double cream

    1. Place the blackberries, sugar and water in a saucepan and simmer gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the berries have broken down and the sugar is dissolved. Strain through a nylon sieve, using a wooden spoon to push the juice through. Discard the seeds and allow the blackberry syrup to cool slightly.
    2. Whisk together the yoghurt, cream and syrup until well blended and slightly thickened. Pour into a shallow plastic tub and place in the freezer. (If you have an icecream maker, use according to manufacturer's instructions.)
    3. After two hours, whisk the still soft ice cream using an electric whisk (just whisk in the container) or food processor, to break up any ice crystals. Return to the freezer for another 4-6 hours or until frozen solid. 4. Remove 10 minutes before serving so it is soft enough to scoop.

Put them in the oven for about 10 minutes with the lids (unless they're plastic;) ).
  • we have an old one of these in our garden, and they do make an interesting addition to crumble, pies and the like.

in fact, i am thinking of getting a couple more. has any one bought any trees of these, and if so where from? what price and quality?

    thanks
