Anyone know anywhere thats still good for picking around Liverpool/Merseyside way? I'm a bit slow off the mark this year and now have 11lbs of apples to process so I would like to make some bramble jelly

Ello Floyd :) I'm on the wirral and know lots of places this side of the water. Otherwise, just keep an eye out on any hedgerows or country parks.

Parkgate is a good place, the Heswall end where the country park car park is and the road back up to the Chester High Road.

West Kirby - the common where the big grey war memorial is (so says the mother anyway).

Meols Drive - the Moreton end along the stretch where the farms are. Also spotted a couple of sloe trees by Meols train station.

Thurstaston - along Church road by Church Farm, and down in the Country Park.

Bidston Country Park (by golf course) - noticed a couple of apple trees there aswell.

That should keep you going :D

Battersea Park? Or maybe the commons, Clapham and Wandsworth.

Battersea Park's a bit well-kept for brambles, and Clapham Common too...Wandsworth Common does have brambles but I had a bad experience on the "wild" bit of that common about 15 years ago and haven't been back since :undecided

I saw some brambles today actually, but they were in the centre of some other bushes and I wouldn't have reached. Besides, it was on a main road with loads of people around, and the berries - although lovely and ripe - were really small/undeveloped...

Ah. It's been a long time since I've been there. (I used to live by Wandsworth Common).
I know it's a bit further afield, but what about Wimbledon Common or Richmond Park? There are also lots of nut trees there!
  • Very disappointed this year. All those I've picked I've been horrible - not the usual sweet, berry taste. Rather ..... a musty taste - botrytris, I would guess due to a very wet August and no sign of any improvement in September!

    What have yours been like?
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
