I used to be in the position of having to drive an 80 mile round trip to work every day and it cost me a fortune five years ago . . . glad I'm not there any more!! I really do have sympathy for those people who have no viable alternatives.
I have managed to get my car /petrol usage down to about 50 miles (£12.50) a month by simply using my car much less . . . mostly for heavy grocery shops. Otherwise I use the bus / tram or I walk / cycle and incorporate that into my fitness routine so it's good for my health and the environment as well as my purse. A year ago I would have been lost without my car but a massive drop in income meant that my habits were forced to change. Now I have started to consider if I could manage without a car completely . . .mmmm, still seeking something witty to be my auto-signature . . . so this will have to suffice for now0 -

If nothing you want or need is nearby, have you thought that perhaps you might be living in the wrong place?
Frequently. It's something I'm actively looking to resolve in the next 10-14 months!Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I've been driving like this since petrol stations stopped displaying the price in gallons. Its common sense. So this 120p a litre is painful and nothing any sensible money saver can do will help because we have all been doing it anyway. Those who race around like mad just don't care about stuff like this are too stupid to educate. Or maybe its their right to drive fast.
Anyway the fact of the matter is - petrol and especially diesel is far too highly taxed in the UK. And no party is recognising this or has plans to reverse this.0 -
I had thought the electric car was the future, until Mitsubishi announced the £38,699 price tag. I am still waiting for somebody to say April Fools!, but it's for real.
So it looks like a steam engine car running on wood soon.0 -
What have you done so far?
Drive light (no clutter)
Drive a diesel
Don't race the engine (will go max 65 on motorways)
No roofracks
Tyre Pressure checked at every fill up.
Short journeys taken by bike instead of car.
Car kept clean on outside
Usually fill up to 3/4 full tank.
Filled up full this morning (51 Litres) - £60.00, should do me for around 600 miles.
The commute to work is 26.7 miles each way, can move closer as we live exactly halfway between mine and my gf's place of work.
I JUST WANT PETROL PRICES TO COME DOWN!! alas, that is never ever going to happen.:mad:0 -

Agreed, it is just headline grabbing rubbish, a bit Daily Mail-ish if you ask me.;)0
