This may surprise some considering my posts on the good life threads, but I would suggest non interference, those birds know what they are doing.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

I've been following this thread for a while and its so exciting for you. Its incredible where they nest. I've had a Great Tit nesting under my bedroom windowsill (on 2nd floor!) for the past few years, fascinating and pretty noisy too. I get mini mealworms online from a company called Ark Wildlife and in the spirit of money saving, you get a discount if you have a regular order. Just in case its any help0

well was in kitchen watching on the camera and one baby kind of fell out nest (although we been saying they going to come out sometime as they keep almost hanging out etc) he then fluttered a bit and caught himself on the cellotape bit.
he got caught in it and we watched in panic and wasnt sure what to do. anyway within a few mins he was upright and had his head poking out in between the bits of cellotape and then hubby went out and walked past and he kind of fluttered again then went on the floor.
We all paniced and wasnt sure what to do. The otehrs are still in the nest and this little one was hopping fluttering about the yard so i got plastic gloves on (so my smell wouldnt go on him and be abandoned by mother) he went down the garden near my tomatoes and we tried getting him but hes really quick. We were going to put him back in the nest. Anyway, he then made his way to the gate area where there is a little space big enough for him to get under and go down the alley at the side of the house where there are sometimes cats and dogs etc. So we diverted him away from that and now he is down the bottom of the garden and gone under a big spreading bush.
Started crying my eyes out and thinking he is going to get eaten by a cat or something else. I dont know what to do.
Is this all normal and should we leave him be? Should he have came out now? They are all fully feathered and standing and hopping about and kind of flying but not if you know what i mean. He flys a little but doesnt get very high. I am just so worried he will be hurt.
Will mum look out for him and find him?
Im so pleased she chose our nest so we have had the pleasure of watching them all but i have to say that when i came in the house crying i was angry we couldnt catch him and said 'i wish they hadnt chose that nest then we wouldnt know if things go wrong', i didnt mean it like that though.0 -
Well just spoke to r.s.p.b. n they said we musnt catch the little one n put him back as it may cause problems.
We got to just leave them be and the mother will sort them out. We have been watching her and shes been going down the garden feeding the baby that must be at the side of the summer house and is still back n forth to the nest feeding the other 3.
Was really sad when the lady on the phone just told me that when they l;eave the nest then thats it. They dont come back. I had hoped they would sleep in there for at least a few nights before they went off.
She said they leave and the mother learns them bout feeding, flying etc. If we hear the alarm call then to look out n make sure nothing is bothering her etc. So hopefully they will all be ok.0 -
Oh no, it's so stressful isn't it, you worry for the babies. I end up hovering about ready to chase off the cats half the time! Hope all works out ok for you...0

Thanks energise. You know how it is then
. Yes lovely to watch them but stessful at times like this. Got it to come with the other 3 yet too.
Also got the worry of the sparrowhawk diving down after them. If i had to choose though i would rather them than cats as cats just play and kill where as sparrowhawks have to feed their young too. Just the way nature is but can be cruel at times.0 -
Well, another left the nest this afternoon so two in and two out. It was about 3.30pm the second one went and i thought i would let them get on with it and do whatever they do. I kept watch though inside on the camera to check she was coming back to feed the two left in the nest. It was an hour or so before she did but she came back.
I heard the free babies calling out from over the fence somewhere and so opened my back gate that leads to an alley and two others gardens and there was the two babies with mum then going under the back gate of a neighbour that lives two doors up. I was so worried about them but left them be and we went upstairs and looked out the bedroom window and saw mum sitting on the fence and one of the two babies in a rockery trying to jump up to mum.
Anyway, about 6.30pm tonight was the last time we saw her go to the nest to feed the two remaining and she hasnt been back since and is not in there now. They have been calling her all night until about 9.15. They have settled down in there for the night. No signs of mum or the other two babies (im just trying so hard to not even think what may have happened to them, as ive been sobbing hearing the two left in the nest calling her and allsorts been going round in my head).
What im wondering now is, will the two left survive the night without her? If she hasnt come back to them by the morning should i try feed them some of the live mini meal worms myself? If so how? Read somewhere to use tweezers and place well in the beak, also read moisten a cotton bud and use that. So i dont know what to do tomorrow. Please can anyone give me suggestions.
They are at least 11 days old that we know of (since being able to hear them make a noise so could be older) and are fully feathered, eyes open and fluttering etc.0 -
