OMG!! Im in tears here. Please tell me the bird will be ok. We have just gone out the back to have a ciggy and stood talking as we do most nights in the dark as we just knew (assumed) the bird wasnt in there at night. All the time we stood there talking about the nest etc and heard nothing. We stood and said that we ought to put a bit more tape around the bottom so its more secure for them and so got the tape slid it up the back so it didnt move the chimes at all and then its just flew out the nest!!!
We were shocked. As we have been out there every night when dark and talked about how we wonder where it goes at night etc, never dreaming it would be in there. Im so worried now that we may have scared it away and it doesnt come back. But more worrying is where will it go in the dark tonight and will it be safe? We have an outside light in that bit that we have now turned on (usually always off) so that it can see to come back tonight if it wants to. I cant go check if its back in there without scaring it off again. I just dont know what to do for the best. My hubby says it will be ok, but i think hes just saying that to stop me being upset.
What does everyone else think?0 -
Been thinking. During the day as soon as we open the back door, if the bird is in there then it flies straight out. So why when we opened the door tonight and stood talking did it stay in the nest the whole time? Is it scared of the dark and doesnt want to fly at night? Thats what im thinking now and feeling even more worried.
I just want to know its back in there and safe but until we can see in the morning we will not know.
We have actually tuned the outside light off now as we thought that might be best as thats what it is used to. The kitchen light is still on which we always leave on every night and that gives some light through the back door window.0 -
It's almost certainly fine - I believe it's common for birds such as wrens to roost at night in nests before they are actually ready to use them.
In the dark it would be more reluctant to leave, but having disturbed it, it will have flown off somewhere else to roost without a problem.
Whether the minor scare will have put it off staying remains to be seen, though. You'll probably find out tomorrow...0 -
Thankyou. Youve made me feel a little better saying its probably fine. Ive been sat here refreshing this page waiting to see if i get any replies, lol.
Like you say, ive just got to wait until the morning to find out for sure. I will be back on tomorrow and keep you updated.0 -
It'll be fine - it's almost certainly too early for them to be laying, particularly given the cold conditions until recently, so you've just given it a fright which it will have forgotten about in a few minutes!
If you are unlucky, the pair will have a good "second best" site and will choose that instead. If not, they will be back.
I'm jealous you've got them so close to watch - wrens are my favourite of the tiny birds.0 -
Yeah they are tiny. Its only since having them in there that ive looked them up so much the last few days. I didnt realise they are so common and yet you hardly see them. Weve seen one dart about at the bottom of the garden in they ivy that creeps over the gravel near the shed but you hardly get a glimpse of it and its gone again.
Well im off to bed in a mo and going to try not to worry too much so i can get some sleep and will be up and about in the morning and hope hes back. I will be so relieved to see him if he does. Nite0 -
Keep us updated, this is very interesting!0

Well im really pleased to say he has been back this morning. Havent seen him myself but hubby saw him a couple of times go in and out the nest.0

Am glad he's back, be so interesting if you have chicks, am quite jealous, just act as you usually do, he is probably used to what you get up to. Thanks for the pics too!0
