Sorry to jump on this thread but it sounds similar to what we have going on.

We are lucky enough to have quite a few birds nesting in our garden but a new one on me is a robin's nest in our patio heater.

They have built the nest above the gas bottle kept at the bottom. I dont want to disturb them but we will want to use the heater at some point. As its the top that gets hot does anyone think this would be a problem?

I have to say mum and dad are fantastic parents they must come and go 200-300 times a day!!!

Oh how exciting for you, me being the silly moo that I am would let them get on with it and be cold in the garden and not use the patio heater at all so not to disturb them, bless them.

Sorry everybody for not having replied lately. Yes hes still coming and going and taking bits for the nest.

Was quite excited the other day as we saw what looked like a slightly different coloured wren (thought it may be the female) and it was taking feathers to the nest. Havent seen feathers being took since but have seen what we think is a different coloured one still going back n forth still. So wether that is the female we dont know. It seems a bit gingery coloured. I have tried googling the difference between male and female but dont seem to be able to find anything.

Sounds fun with the patio heater!! Sorry but if it was me i would have to do the same and go cold, lol. Or just put a coat on and leave them be. Can you put pic up of them? Would be great to see. I love robins and we have young ones that still havent got the red breast yet that i think used next doors nest box. Usually theres 3 of them hopping about under our snowball bush feeding.

Well ive come on to update with the news of the birth of babies!! :)

The last week or so he had been really busy in and out and we saw a few times what we assume was the female. This morning i got woken by hubby to be told he could hear babies in the nest, so i quickly got up and went outside to have a listen for myself.

Maybe they were born in the night or perhaps they are a few days old but only now able to make a noise, i really dont know. I have read that it is now the females job to feed them and its quite strange because mr wren was not bothered at all by our presence and flew in and out with us in the garden. Mrs wren though is rather more wary and sits and waits in the snowball tree until we go in and then she flies in. The poor dog doesnt get allowed out there as much anymore as i cant risk her being put off and not flying in and feeding the babies as often as she should.

Cant wait for the first look at the babies when they poke their heads out. We have the camera on the go again so as soon as i get any pics i will post them on here.

    Aw that wonderful :)

My parents have a nest in their hedge and we have been hearing the babies during feeding time. It is so nice to watch and listen to them busy at work.

Well i can see them in the nest bopping about, soooo cute with their little eyes n beaks.

Am so worried with this gusty wind though as the poor little mum is backwards n forwards feeding them but ive been watching n often the wind catches hold of her and chucks her about. She flew out the nest yesterday and went to land on the gate but the wind took her and she crashed into the concrete post and fell to the floor, poor thing. I watched though and she then flew into the garden and has been ok since. Feel so sorry for her as shes braving the wind and still back n forth.

Can anyone tell me, when the time comes for them to leave the nest for the first time, will they fly out and not come back? Do they all come back at night for a few nights to start with? I dont like the thought of them leaving the nest and being out there on their own and vunerable.

Any ideas what we can put underneath the nest on the floor in case any fall? Had thought of putting a pillow on the floor but then it would get wet, although we could put it in a bin bag or something. Would that put her off though if there is something new nearby that she is not used to?

We have a new stool for the kitchen and the old one still sits up the other end as hubby doesnt want to put it outside as he doesnt want her to be scared off by something new. Hes just as protective of them as me, quite cute really, lol.

couldnt figure how to type in with the pic. Just wanted to add though that i took the pic about a couple of feet away from the nest entrance and had to lighten it a lot with pic fix as the hole where they are is quite dark. Thats why the pic looks a little weird but if you look closely you can see the yellow of the beak and the little eyes and head. :)

Have been in pet shop today for wild bird food for all the other birds and asked if its possible to buy live bugs for the wren. The lady then told me they can order in live mini meal worms that the mother can feed to the babies. So ive got some of them coming tuesday for her (deliverys only tuesday and fridays).
  • You're so kind, and really thoughtful, it's wonderful to read! I've just discovered this thread this morning, and enjoyed every bit! I bet the little family will really enjoy the meal worms you're ordering, especially with all the bad weather you mentioned. Well done, and thanks for taking such good care and interest in our wonderful wildlife! Please keep us updated, and all the best (to all of you) x
