Thats later than I go to bed!!

My two are 12 and 11, and both go up to bed at 8pm on school nights. They can then both read, younger one til 8.30 and older one til 8.45.

On weekends they stay up til 8.30, or 9pm as a rare treat.

I don't do late nights, and need my sleep, plus I like to have some time to relax without kids in the evening. My two both need a lot of sleep, especially the younger one. They do have a couple of nights when they are later due to scouts and ju-jitsu, and are really tired in the morning.

I think 10pm for an 11 year old is very late (but thats just my personal opinion). I'm aware that some kids just don't seem to need much sleep at all (and am so thankfull mine aren't like that, it would half kill me!).

Is he 11 in yr 6 or 7? If he's in Yr 6 and mixing in the playground with kids from reception upwards then I don't believe that 'everyone else' goes tio bed later. If he's in yr 7 then I think it ***might*** be true that some kids are up later (especially if they are older). Like others I think 10pm is late enough, though that will depend on your son and how much sleep he needs. I have a 10 year old who is convinced sleep is optional!
  • Tell him that you've phoned around and found out that 'everyone else' is in bed with lights out by 9pm, and as such, bedtime from now on will be 9.30, just so as he can tell them that he is the one up latest.

My problems with DD1 started when I kicked off about her being on the phone to her boyfriend all night and keeping DD2 awake. When I took the mobile off her, they got another one on the quiet. Then it all went crazy, but at least DD2 gets to sleep at a more reasonable time now (DD2 was guaranteed to still be awake at 11 because DD1 would be texting and whispering under the covers, hiding the phone and denying its existence when DD2 complained)

Sleep is non negotiable, especially when secondary school can mean earlier mornings and punishments for lateness/sleepiness for the first time.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I think that is far too late on a school night.
Since my ds turned 13 he is allowed to stay up until 9pm on both weekdays and the weekend, although at the weekend he is allowed to 'do' things in his room for a bit longer.
Between about 11 and 13 he had to be in bed by 8.30 and lights off and go to sleep for 9pm.

He has always had no problem in getting up in the morning.

i think 10 30 quite late for an 11 year old i would say 9-10ish so he should think himself lucky

Well i must be the worst mum ever then lol, my 11 year old goes up to bed between 7 and 7.30 and is allowed to read for between 15 mins and half an hour depending on what tme he went to bed, he does however struggle without this amount of sleep as he suffers from migrains.

We have however noticed he is getting up earlier than his younger brother now so maybe he needs that little bit less sleep?

He does stay up later on thursdays for scouts though, so then its 9.30 sometimes later if they have been out on a trip or something.

I find it a struggle gettin 2 to bed at seperate times as the youngest who is 6 will just stay awake until he hears his brother come to bed altho they are in seperate rooms i think its just a control thing lol, dont wanna hijack the thread but anyone any ideas how to help with that?

So OP in answer to your question, i do think that 10pm is very late, but each child is different!

I think it tends to depend on the child really. My 14 year old needs more sleep than his 12 year old brother and always has done:D

They both go to bed by 10pm generally and that is it. No reading or listening to anything as they still have to share a bedroom.

DS2 is always first up in our house, usually well before 7.00 am, so I don't think it is hurting him at all. When they went to bed at 8.00 pm he was often up at 5.00 am:eek::eek:

Difficult to get mine to bed any earlier due to the amount of after school activities tbh:o

DD1 just turned 11 and goes to bed at 9, reads for 30mins then lights off including fri as she has training saturday morning. sat night she stays uo untill about 11 sometimes a bit later (depending on if I give in and let her have longer :o). starting september (start of high school) she will have to go to bed earlier as she has to travel further to school and will have to get up earlier. at the mo im thinking 9pm lights out on school nights starting sept

Feisty_Fairy if you find a solution to that one let us know!! DD2 is 5 and hardly ever goes to sleep before her big sis despite going to bed at 7 :wall:
