There is a second verse? What is in that? I learnt it in brownies too but never went to a McD's till I was ~14 and Pizza hut till I went to Uni! :p It was all just words at that age...

Potty, if Weezl mentions any phoning, first dibs to you - in the meantime, can you read a spreadsheet ? We really need someone to do the five-a-day calculation ? If not, no worries, I'll leave you something on here by tonight to have a go at :D
    Smashing :j
I can read a spread sheet.....
And do very basic stuff with them...
I can try the 5 a day calcs if you wish... but not sure it would be accurate :o

Do you think the FSA would actually stop things like BSE happeneing or just stop there being scares about them?

I dont think they could stop either to be honest.

BSE, or any other disease, is not something that can be stopped by mere agencies, or humans. There has to be a greater being that deems such neccesary occurances. I know everyone has their own beliefs, and thats why, I have not named my greater being, or beliefs :o:)

As for the scares or hypes...
That really is a media feeding frenzy as far as I can see....
And I am not sure that even a greater being could stop that ;)

    Hmmmmm
Sounds very similar to a Billy Connolly saying

    Back soon :D

You know the vegan shepherd's pie ? The one with lentils ? Question is, should it be called shepherd-less (as in no shepherd) or shepherdess (a girl shepherd) ?

At the moment it's shepherd-less, but I don't like it - to me that name makes it appear as a dish without direction, a lost sheep; and the veggie versions of the shepherd's pie that I came across so far were usually called "shepherdess".

However, the more I talk about it, the less sense this second option seems to make ! Why the heck a shepherdess ?

Hmmmm. How's about "vegetarian cottage pie" ?

    Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight :D
It has always been known to me as "shepherdess" ....
I did wonder when I seen "shepherd-less" pie...
I didnt make any sense to me :o:)

    Ahemmmm :o
Some reasoning for "shepherdess" pie... :o;)
A males anatomy, is commonly referred to as "meat and two veg"
So, if a pie, is a "shepherd's pie", it contains meat .... and two veg ;) (carrot and onion is what I would add :), but I guess that could vary;))
And if its a "shepherdess pie", as it is a female version, has no meat in it... I guess you could add whatever veg ;):D
    I hope this helps :D

Cottage pie, is different, completely from shepherds pie....
Though the difference escapes me at the moment, there is one, and they are not the same.... I will remember tomorrow :o

Potty, when you're next on - I believe you tested a few of the vegan recipes ? Can you have a look at the site and check that you're happy with the preparation and cooking times as published ?

    Thanks :)

Yep, Weezl, I like Susan's chart idea.
    Susans chart is fab :D
I did test quite a few vegan recipes, but didn't note how long anything took :o
But I will check the list and let you know if I notice a vast difference in timings :D
Will check on my days off... Wed/thurs :D

Has anyone apart from Shanks tested vegan mayo and been sucessful with it ? Likewise, has anyone tried the raisin biscuits ?

If so, would you be able to help out with the recipe/methods ?

I can try both... within the week if you wish :D

    Caught up now....
    Bedtime, till tomorrow :D
  • I'd never heard anything about shepherd's pie referring to anatomy. It makes me laugh and also feel a little ill. :rotfl:

As far as I know cottage pie is made with beef and shpeherd's pie is made with lamb. Both being intended to use up leftover scraps of larger joints. The different names because shepherds would be more like to eat lamb (or mutton) than beef.

I always used shepherdess and shepherdless pie interchangably. Shepherdess pie make me think that when the shepherd didn't bring home any sheep for eating the wily shepherdess made a delicious pie with lentils instead. However, shepherd-less pie could suggest that a woman without her shepherd could make a declicious lentil pie without him.

However, for clarity, it's probably easier to call it either vegan shepherds'/cottage pie OR lentil shepherd's/cottage pie. It doesn't matter which as there's no meat anyway!

Interestingly, wikipedia suggests that cottage pie is the older version and that for a century was used to refer to both versions regardless of type of meat.

How's that for an overly long and obsessive post about pie names. :o

I'd forgotten about that one. Although we had "Ferrarri" where you have "a Lorry".

Cottage pie is beef and shepherd's pie is lamb.

On the carrot cake recipe, is it worth putting a note about saving the orange carcasses for making the marmalade with? At the moment the only place I can see it mentioned is on the marmalade recipe page, which might be too late if Shirl has already made carrot cake and chucked the carcasses out.

A few people did a google search using words cheap family recipes, within a few seconds of each other. A bunch of them got CFR as the fifth link on the google page. I got it as the first. Why was mine different to everyone else's ?

Using the Yahoo toolbar - which offers free Nectar points :money: - it comes up fourth; third if you search 'only in UK' ;)

    very good point :)

shanks any chance you could make sure this goes on my edits list? Thank you for your hard work.

However, I regret to say that I think your current office calendar is in very poor taste. I do acknowledge that Mr July is a fine example of a male, but I would like you to position a couple of post it notes to cover his particularities.
