oh that song drives me insane, my eldest came home when he was 6 (he's now 10yrs) and taught it his little brother (then 2yrs now 6).
I probably shouldn't have complained but it just really upset me that they were promoting a company .i.e McDonalds to a group of young children.

Yes Susan it is more of a lack of concern the government has regarding the public needs.
as a parent I relate, I think more from the idea that this song will create pester power, so that when we ask kessie and fergus where they'd like to eat, they might go for those named in the song.

But no-one's going to make a kids song with actions about 'a lovely little tearooms with homemade bara brith', so mummy always loses :(

[QUOTE=artybear;34653073However a little bit of me is saddened that as a society we are so far away from understanding how food is made/produced that we have to have a system that tells people about it. I get VERY annoyed when people dont like thinking the meat on their plate has been killed etc... and i was a veggie for 8 years! However this all comes from education in schools/families which is a much more long-term development.

so true arty! my children know where they food comes from as i far as i can tell them, if they ask what the sausage is made of i darn well tell them. Including hot dogs are just list scrap of meat like lips that are ground up. They didn't like it but hey they have got to know in my opinion.

ETA: I also learnt the pizza hut song in brownies, we didnt have a Mcdonalds within 150miles of my house and I had never gone to pizza hut till I was at uni....I think its just one of those songs you learn[/QUOTE]
the pizza hut song should be banned in my opinion, i live quite close to them so its even worse for me. But at least my kids know its bad for them. 35 kids in a class, while less than half of them knew the alphabet. Yet they could teach that rubbish to them

You know the vegan shepherd's pie ? The one with lentils ? Question is, should it be called shepherd-less (as in no shepherd) or shepherdess (a girl shepherd) ?

At the moment it's shepherd-less, but I don't like it - to me that name makes it appear as a dish without direction, a lost sheep; and the veggie versions of the shepherd's pie that I came across so far were usually called "shepherdess".

However, the more I talk about it, the less sense this second option seems to make ! Why the heck a shepherdess ?

Hmmmm. How's about "vegetarian cottage pie" ?

And me. I still don't eat beef (having stopped just before the first BSE panic in the 1980s, when articles started appearing on the Farming Today programme but hadn't reached the mainstream press). I don't understand the government's policy on it -- just because you kill an animal before its symptoms are obvious doesn't mean it is free of a disease we are told is contracted in the womb.

Arty we still eat beef as well. Not normally steak, but roasted or just minced up.
But its each to there own. Two years ago people were saying all forms of poultry should be culled because of the risk of bird flu and eggs should be banned because of the risk of salmonella.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm genuinely puzzled.
This thread is now over 6k posts long and appears on the How Much Have You Saved thread. I can't figure out how much anyone has saved. In fact I can't figure out what the thread is about apart from general chit chat about food and recipes. Is it possible to put a sticky somewhere giving an explanation of what's what?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I learned that pizza hut song in brownies along with the second verse. I don't think I even knew at the time that they were all places to eat - it was just random words to me.
There is a second verse? What is in that? I learnt it in brownies too but never went to a McD's till I was ~14 and Pizza hut till I went to Uni! :p It was all just words at that age...

I don't mind the traffic light food labels... especially if it reminds me that something has loads of salt. I think the problem is that fat is seen as the devil in general rather than an essential part of a balanced, varied healthy diet!

What exactly is the guideline fat amount for an average shirley?

I'm veggie so don't do beef - I think the last beef I ate was in the early 80s. I have no idea what it tastes like... :rotfl:

Is it sad that I didn't know till I was 10 or so that shepherds pie was normally made with meat? We always had a lentil version! Not sure about the shepherd-less name either. I like the Sheperdess or vegetarian cottage pie options better...
