Entirely unrelated to the thread but I just got a new electricity monitor and I have to say Oh My God. Bad washing machine.

Have been running around the house looking for things to turn off. Terrrifying.
The setting which makes the biggest difference on your washing machine is the temperature. I've done graphs of the cost of mine for different temperatures on different cycles but the notebook is AWOL at the moment so I can't actually quote you figures.

On an unrelated note, does anyone think Shirl's Bean Curry might be nice with jacket potatoes instead of rice, kinda like a bean chilli IYSWIM? We have tons of spuds to use up over the coming week, that's all. Thank you :A

  • That's an impressive price for a month's worth of food. Especially without the fortified oaty stuff. I know I brought up the point originally but I'd probably eat the oats rather than drink that much milk - can't imagine what I'd put it all into! Have you thought of any recipes for it all yet?

Going back to folate, did you know that it's under consideration by the government to fortify all flour (except wholemeal) with folate just like they already do with calcium? So if it goes through our families should all be super-duper 'folated'.

yep recipes could be tricky, especially when you all hear what the constraining parameters have to be.

We all love a challenge on here though eh? :rotfl:

I don't know if this is a controversial view but I think I'm in favour of folate fortification. I don't feel an unborn baby should suffer (or his family) because his mum hasn't had adequate teaching about nutrition.

that's a lot of milk in a lot of tea!

Am i crazy or is there something about tea/coffee affecting iron absorption?

  • Wow, amazing how much a little milk adds up over a month!

I think there isn't too much controversy over the folate fortification. The issues against are:

1 - it can cover up B12 deficiency which gets commoner in the elderly and vegans (counter argument is that monitoring of b12 deficiency in at risk groups should be more effective) and
2 - excessive folate has been linked in some studies with increases in colorectal cancer (counter argument - not much increase and those at risk can monitor folate intake more easily than other way around).

I think it probably will go through one day but it has been in action since 2002 so may take a while yet! They already do it in the USA for most flours (called enriched rather than fortified as they are 'replacing' what what lost in processing grain into white flour).

That is true. Normally I'd say drink some OJ to help iron absorbtion rates but that's going to take us waaaay over budget.
