Those wraps look lovely, I managed to get a bag of sweet potatoes for 20p on Thursday I was wondering what to do with them. How long did it take you to make howlin? The lentil casserole looks nice too, have you tried ot yet?0

I've made the lentil casserole and the tamarind chickpeas loads. Both are relatively easy and low work involvement. I haven't tried the recipe pink hayley posted yet but I think it's going on my list. The lentil casserole is really warming and filling. Nice with chappatis and a little yogurtSealed pot member 735

Morag how spooky, I was going to ask you if you'd mind reposting thatthank you!
So to summarise yesterday, people are very keen on the hardcore planner and we do not feel that genuine shirley's will be the ones criticising the plan.
Can I say how I see it?
Even if shirl doesn't come with us in the thinking revealed in avocet's introduction, this is what I think she'd probably do: do her own month one with the meat.
probably do it again one more month. As some dishes have now been eaten 6 times, she may now need some variety. She then reads her own alternatives article and makes that do her another month.
Then she looks at Kitty's planner, and uses the fruit money to buy 2 chickens and a couple of bars of chocolate. The chicken makes an enormous amount of pies and everyone is happy.
She does that and it's alternatives for a month again.
Then she has a look at the hardcore month. She's read avocets introduction but she doesn't get it. Why would the govt say 5 a day and all her friends say but ideally more if you can get away with 2?
BUT, she and Bob have saved so much money, and the food is so nice, and Bob's not grumpy about the meatlessness, he even told his friends at work about this really nice onion quiche he made on the weekend. He's feeling all Jamie about it.
So she thinks, I'll do the hardcore month, but I've realised that carrots, onion and marrowfats are such a cheap way to get veg, that I'll add those in.
So I'm going to have my 5 a day, but because I started with the 50p plan, I'm still under 80p a day.
So that's 5 months.
I personally would then have no trouble at all with going back to the original month, cos after 3 months without the pizza, risi e bisi and carbonara, they'd be all new again, YAY!
I think she's sorted.

But that might be wishful thinking, so howlin, do you agree that that's enough to keep shirl going?

Can I think about it for a bit? I've been thinking Shirley since about 6.30 this morning so I shall keep thinking while I go and look for a new fridge freezer.
Although can I just say that I think JulieMK (at least I hope it was Julie) made some really good points a page or two back about what tools Shirley would need in order to be able to go it alone or adapt plans and recipes and I think that merits some further thought.Sealed pot member 735

I'm kinda with you on the thinking, Weezl - and I'm totally with Avocet on the need to explain your thinking and give as much nutritional info as is possible - we have seen already what happens when it's not all out there, blow by blow for people to see where you're coming from.
Looking at your reasoning above, I would be inclined to think that as long as there's some meat in the hardcore planner, Bob would have no problem with it (who wants to eat rabbit food, anyways ?); Shirl will be swayed by the nutritional breakdown eventually; it's Jenny and Jason I'd be most worried about, as they are likely to be learning about 5-a-day at school, and when they have to do their own food diary for a week, the teachers will probably be shocked to see at what they would perceive as lack of fresh goodness in their diet. Cue deprived child syndrome.
Which is why they MUST have the nutritional info right there, so they can show their teachers that no, they are not lacking in anything, and that there are more inventive ways of getting their nutrients than the one-size-fits-none five-a-day malarkey.
I will have a bit of time on the PC to spare today - I'll do the "you can help" bit for "about us" first, I can't go any further on the Kitty batch cook/weekly list until I have the monthly shopping list and menu plan fully confirmed - did you want Shirl Week 3 and 4 shopping lists, or can I do anything else for you ?
Oh, and did you find Susan's post you were after yesterday in the end ?0 -
About Us
Cheap Family Recipes team is a non-profit community of volunteers who met on a moneysaving forum. We are not professional chefs, nutritionists or financial advisers, but between us we have a huge range of experience when it comes to cooking, grocery shopping and feeding our families on a budget. Our passion for food is rivaled only by our passion for eradicating unsupportable debt and supporting subsistence living and financial independence.
The creative force behind the concept, and the author of the website, is mother to two young boys and an old hand at frugal living, having successfully lived on a daily food budget of 50p. Each and every recipe on the site has been given a seal of approval by her husband and elder son (the younger still being too little for solids).
The aim of Cheap Family Recipes is to provide a free online resource for all who are forced to live at subsistence level, but do not have the skills, the knowledge or the confidence to do so without jeopardising their family’s health. This is the reason that the budget has been set so low, but it does not mean that if you are fortunate enough not to belong in this category, there is nothing here for you. On the contrary, we hope that the site will be helpful to all who feel they could benefit from reducing their food spends, regardless of the reason.
We will be very happy if you find the planners on the site useful during a stressful time, but we will be even happier if the information and tips on this website give you confidence to become more creative within the confines of your own budget.
