Weezl, further questions - I now have a list of ingredients and amounts necessary for week one of Shirl's food; do I shop for best value (and plenty leftover), or do I shop for "least cash parted with" options ? I mean, for instance, Shirl only needs 10 eggs in her first week - do I still make her buy 30 because that multipack is best value, or should I just tell her to buy a dozen even though it might be more expensive ?

yes! The weekly list isn't quite as straightforward is it! I'd say get her to buy the 30, cos we'll assume she's an 'on board' shirl who'll use them. But possibly if this is not too much work, we could pop in brackets afterwards how many will be used by week one, so she can chicken out (pardon the pun) if she thinks the family might hate it, ie:

    30 cooks eggs £2.35 (10 used)

    or something? :)
