Chickpeas have been on an hour and a half and are not 'soft' and I didn't have any red peppers in a jar so roasted some fresh ones but forgot and burnt them:o:(

an hour and a half to two hrs is about right. When you eat one is the inside kinda grainy and powdery or more crunchy and smooth on your tongue on the edges of the bitten bits?

put the peppers in a food bag to get a bit sweaty then after a few mins, peel off the black outer skins. If the underneath flesh is not too charred, it should still work burgundy in colour is the darkest I'd allow personally :)

Ok when we bit into them I thought it was smooth and mr arty thought it was crunchy and grainy!!!

We have saved most of the peppers-it may just have a bit more of a smoky flavour to it than you had in yours.

    How 'soft' do chickpeas go?

not as soft as a frozen pea when cooked, the inside usually takes on a powdery feel. they normally gain about 2.2 times their original weight in cooking, so you could try weighing them, or alternatively put one on your chopping board and try to mash it with your fork. If cooked it will mash with firm thumb pressure. if not it will break into pieces rather than mash.

    any help?
