    Afternoon :)

    Weezl, I can't remember what ingredients you said you had left over from the planner apart from the words 'bread crumbs'.

    Having searched the net extensively, this is the recipe that repeatedly comes up:-

    BREAD CRUMB COOKIES

    1¼ cups of plain flour
    1¼ cups of sugar
    ½ tsp salt
    ½ tsp baking powder
    ⅓ cup cocoa
    ½ cup milk
    1 egg
    1½ tsp vanilla essence
    ⅔ cup vegetable oil
    2 cups of breadcrumbs

    Makes 24 Cookies

    Sift together the first 5 ingredients.
    Combine the milk, egg and vanilla and add to the dry ingredients.
    Mix in the vegetable oil and add breadcrumbs.

    Drop by spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet
    Bake at 180 c 15 mins or until done

    Variations:
    For Mexican Chocolate Cookies: add 1 tsp cinnamon and almonds
    For Cinnamon Sugar Cookies: omit cocoa add 1 tsp cinnamon.
    For Cappuccino Cookies: add 1 tsp cinnamon, and 2 Tbsp instant coffee

    I've never found an easy way of converting cup measurements into what I call "sensible" measurements, otherwise I would have done it for you.
    I don't "do" cups :DOunces? yes, Grams? yes, Cups? :huh:

    Might be no use to you, but just in case :)

    Shocked that you don't do this!
    After my costly little disaster with my computer I recommend anyone backing things up. Though I got most of stuff back some of my pictures are corrupted and I will never get them back.

    Hope everyone is having a good day x

  • Hello All,

    Just popping back to report on the Red Kidney Bean Bites.

    We had them on Sunday as an added extra served with a Thai Style Butternut Squash Curry. I changed the dry ingredients from 75g wholemeal breadcrumbs to 30g oat cereal and 45g white breadcrumbs. My chopped onions weighed 125g. I prepared them in the morning and chilled them until I was ready to complete the meal in the evening, this helped firm them up before shallow frying. I got 21 bites out of the mixture.

    And the verdict: nobody spotted the oat cereal, they all know I put Marmite in several things but we all prefer them made with chick peas. DH says that the spicy tomato sauce is vital, they didn't in his opinion go with the curry. Boomerang DS1(24) - useful bloke, secondary science teacher, just explained the mysteries of photobucket to me (we took photos but can't post them yet apparently) thought they were "ok". DS3(18) - falafel connoisseur, hungry after band practice, woofed them down without comment.
    I thought they tasted fine and had a slightly softer texture than those made with chick peas.

    If Kitty shares my life long hatred of rice pudding, she could save her creamed coconut for a Butternut squash curry as a bit of variety from the risotto. I would be happy to frugalise that recipe too and would need to substitute the soy and fish sauce for at least 2tsp of yeast extract.:)

    Thanks for that mangojoesno1fan :)

    I've seen these sets before, but am never sure whether 'a cup is a cup' so to speak, i.e. could I use the above set of measuring cups for every recipe I find that asks for 1 cup of this and 1½cups of that? For example, in sets I've come across before, one of the measuring cups may have 1 Cup written on the bottom of it, but my thoughts have always been, "that doesn't look very big for a cup". I mean, is a measuring cup that you cook/weigh with smaller than a standard tea cup?.....oh dear......does anyone understand what I mean? or am I making no sense at all :o

    This for example, looks much bigger than those in the link you gave me if you see what I mean220px-Simple_Measuring_Cup.jpg

    *wonders if we need a polish version of the site*

    Lesley, I think if I was in a different life phase looking at the spreadsheet on my existing kit would be fine! It's that I make a tweak to a recipe (say a panzanella) and then need to see if that's left me with a minus amount of onions, say. So I make the change, and then start scrolling to the right, saying over to myself, panzanella onions, panzanella onions...

    Then Kester squawks, and I pop his dummy in/adjust his blankie, whatever. The I go, 'right where was I?' answer, 'errr, absolutely no idea!'

    and then start again!

    So it makes a relatively short task pretty immense, cos I'm not holding the data well in my tired brain!

    Not a flaw in the spreadsheet tho, just a severe case of 'mummy brain'!

    Are you thinking a larger monitor isn't a great solution?

    Also- I must buy a harddrive and back up CFR to it, it would be so sad if all the hard work died like yours sadly did!! good reminder!

    if it's just checking the amount of ingredient left that's proving difficult, we could echo that figure in a column that you could keep visible in the lhs frozen pane. Or are there other things too?

    losing CFR to a surge would be heart breaking after all the work put into it :(. I just use an external drive and take automatic incremental backups, at the moment on Fridays at 4pm, but could be any interval I wanted. I plug in the usb and switch on the drive just before 4pm, or if I'm not around at that time, the next time I turn on the laptop. We are very dependent on electronics aren't we.

    Like most programmers, when I was a techie I lost a mornings work once when I hadn't saved the program I was working on, my colleagues consoled me by saying that they had all done it too, just the once!

    you are making perfect sense Hipeechiq. I know exactly what you mean (I've just realised how ridiculous that sounds, like I'm a mind reader in my spare time).

    Measuring cups do indeed have a very specific size. I have a set of 4 with the following information on them

    1/4 cup, 60ml, 2fl oz
    1/3 cup, 80ml, 3fl oz
    1/2 cup, 125ml, 4fl oz
    1 cup, 250ml, 9fl oz

    these are standard cup sizes and yes, you can use them for any recipe that uses cups. 250ml is a dainty cup of tea size

    I use them a lot for little jobs. I know for instance that the 1/2 cup size is about 100g red lentils, so it is easy to scoop some out and tip into the soup, and I use them for measuring the oil and water for our recipes

    just noticed your picture and edit, your jug is showing the one cup mark just above the 8fl oz, so that is the same as my metal cups

    the problem with converting cups of course is that they measure by volume, so a cup of airy flour will weigh less in grams or ounces than a dense item (not going to specify one because I might look like an idiot if I say one, someone weighs it and they are the same weight!)

    Third attempt...now in breadmaker - Updated recipe ...

    * 280ml warm water
    * 15g Allinson yeast
    * heaped teaspoon sugar
    * 375g strong bread flour
    * heaped teaspoon salt
    * tablespoon veg (rapeseed) oil

    Put yeast in breadmaker with the sugar and warm water. Stir. Don't switch breadmaker on. Lid down until froth on top of yeast mixture (usually between 5-15mins). Add the flour, salt, oil. Set to medium crust on "rapid" (approx 1hr 50mins) setting. Start the programme and watch as it stirs. If mixture seems too wet, add a little more flour (self-raising or plain is ok to use if you've run out of bread flour). If mixture seems too dry, add a little more warm water. Once you're happy with the dough, close the lid and LEAVE IT to complete the programme.

    I'll let you know the results in about 2 hours :)
