    Updated recipe now in breadmaker...

    * 250ml warm water
    * 15g Allinson yeast (activated in approx 50ml of the warm water)
    * teaspoon sugar (in with the yeast)
    * 375g strong bread flour
    * teaspoon salt (in with the flour)
    * tablespoon veg (rapeseed) oil

    Set to medium crust on "rapid" (mine is 1hr 50mins) setting.

    Put yeast in breadmaker with the sugar and a little warm water. Stir. Don't switch breadmaker on. Lid down until froth on top of yeast mixture. Add the rest of the warm water, flour, salt. Start the programme. If mixture is too wet, add a little more flour. If mixture is too dry, add a little more water. Once you're happy with the dough, close the lid and LEAVE IT to complete the programme.

    I'll let you know the results in about 2 hours :)

    Hey,
    Afraid I am out on the hummus challenge, lack of an accessible food-processor makes it a little difficult. Not sure crushing chick peas by hand is something I fancy doing! :)

    ah :(

    I'm not saying this to pressure you, cos your 'no' is enough for me :)

    But if anyone would like to play along but has no food processor then asda do 200g of houmous for 84p, and you could divide it into 3 to add different flavours, like roasted onion and balsamic, or oregano and mustard.

    So what I'm trying to say is if anyone thought 'oh that would be fun, but I have no food processor!' It's not too costly an expperiment!

    Ooh, I do very much like hummus, so that is an interesting prospect...

    Do we have any kind of sugar?

    dear mr arty bear (via the lovely arty) many thanks for offering your maths and geeky brain to help out old bob and shirl :D It seemed like an amazing opportunity, so I've been thinking of a way I could use your considerable skills.

    one idea I have, and I wonder if you'd have a think about whether such a thing is possible?

    at the moment, we've painstakingly buil one month's shopping list to contain all of the key nutrients ie enough calcium, iron and Vitamins etc.

    but that month will become boring to shirl/kitty after a wee while.

    What I'd love to build and offer to shirl, would be another way of putting together a month's shopping list so she can have a bit of variety. Then she can cook whatever she likes with it, but still know all the nutrients are there.

    So the online tool would hold at a database level the nutritional profile of 100+ ingredients, and would ask shirley things like, pick 4 veggies from this drop-down list, or choose 2 types of meat from this drop down list.

    she taps in her answers, and we spit out a months list that has enough of everything for her family.

    she then goes away and works out what to do with 19 packs of butter and a kit kat :D (JOKE!)

    is this making any sense?

    Don't worry if the putting it online aspect is daunting you, because I think dad and I can host anything that's access DB or excel or similar, my key question is can you think that it's possible to design such a database/application.

    Please don't think I'm asking you to build it, I realise that would immense! But I'd really value you being a consultant at the level of what is possible :)

    Or just say 'bog off weezl!' and that's fine too :rotfl:

    hello

    Its nice to see more people posting, it was a very quiet weekend. :)

    I am just running down my store of food-of which there is very little, and then I am going to start testing some vegan recipes as they look yum...your pictures always make me want to cook Weezl!:D

    I will pass your message along to Mr arty-I know he will be up for it as he likes things like that-however at the moment he is just doing his Mphys finals and is a bit stressed (to put it mildly):(. He finishes this time next week:T so would it be ok if he looked at it then???

    I don't know if this will help spotdogkez, but we tried grating a mature cheddar, stirring in some fairly runny homemade chutney, and using that as a cheesy sandwich filler. We found that just 15g of grated cheddar makes for a satisfyingly cheesy filling which would be only 7p per person of cheddar, which is a good saviing over slicing the cheese :)

    when my girls were taking lunches to school, one of their favourites was cheese and carrot. You can use a small amount of grated cheese, at least twice as much grated carrot and just enough mayo to moisten it, or leave out the mayo and use butter etc on the bread, or even no spread or mayo. I sometimes have it now with a bit of grainy mustard mixed in, sometimes with mayo as well, sometimes not

    they also loved hummus with lots of grated carrot in a sandwich too

    all helps the expensive stuff go further!
