I am happy to help any way I can, maybe I should volunteer to try the batch cooking just to demonstrate my failures?

Weezl, can you look over the edited version above and see if it's any better ? I have not done the edits about overflowing bread yet - need to know what time you think it'd be oven-ready; and need to think about when to fit in pastry making if it doesn't need chilling. All suggestions welcome !

    great :)

Shall I put hyperlinks to all the recipes at the top of the page when I publish it on the site, as well as making them links where they are mentioned in the text?

I am happy to try this one day with your timings to see how it runs :)

I don't think you need to change the timings, it's good for the pastry to sit for a bit, just sian thought it doesn't chill well :)

    Hi sandra :)

OK firstly then, how much marmite will each of them need over the month to ensure the B vitamin complex is met? I think you know what else roughly the diet includes so I think you'll know what's missing :D

    Hi,

This is a difficult one. I will concentrate on B12, as marmite or adsa/tesco yeast extract will be the only source on your planner as you are not using fortified soya milk. Other B vitamins we can meet through vegetables and I will look later at the recipes to see if I see any inadequate B or any other vitamins/minerals.

For a adult to get there daily B12 needs they need to get 3ug a day ideally 3 x 1 portion of fortified foods with approx 1ug each.

(For info only: if you was taking a tablet you would need either 10ug a day or 2000ug a week. This is because it is better absorbed in small amounts and is not 100% absorbed.)

3ug is available from 4 tsp of marmite. I have looked up the info in the marmite website, as I don't use marmite brand due to unilver animal testing. I am assuming you will be using the asda yeast extract as its cheaper (although could be made by unilever I know, but the ingredients are not the same, it doesn't contain the same B vitamins). Anyway putting that aside, if you or anyone has any asda yeast extract, can you check if its 15ug B12 per 100g. If it is it will be the same as the marmite info.

So we need 4 tsp per adult of marmite daily to meet 3ug each (over 14). Under 14s will need less, this varies with age. I can't remember the age of kittys fictional children, so if they are 11-14 its 2.4 daily. (Please note, you may of seen different figures, this is based on 50% absorbtion)

I don't know which recipes have B12 and if we can up any. I am sure the savoury bites could have more. If we are buying a 240g jar of asda yeast extract (assuming this is the same B12 content as marmite) we would get 48 teaspoons per jar. (1 tsp = 5g)

    Hope this helps

    Yep!
I guess its cheaper to buy tablets if you can't afford fortified soya milk or don't want to eat that much yeast extract.
I have posted for vegan recipe testers on the vegan thread, lets hope we get some.
    The morocan salad looks good.

    thanks Aless and sandra:)

oh dear chaps, Kitty's fresh fruit may be on the line here:(

our own brand ready brek gives us half of the month's requirements with the jar of marmite providing 4 more days worth. So we are 12 days worth short :(

    watch this space!

sandra, cheapest bang for your buck products containing B12 would be the next ace bit of research please :D

  • Hi Weezl,
how come you can see all of us lurkers?
I have to say that what you are doing is absolutely fantastic. I have tried a lot of the recipes, and have had great results, few probs with the bread, but it will make great doorstops (my fault) I cook for 4.5 people, fussy husband, fussy son in law, choosy 2.5 yr old grandaughter, and daughter and to be able to provide nourishing meals for us all at a sensible price is brilliant. No one knows that it is a budget meal planner and there have been no complaints.
If it is of any help. I have a day off on Monday and will be happy to try the timetable if you don't think it's too late to be of any use.
have you thought of getting this on TV? maybe Martin would help, whatcha think, then you could help the whole country.
    ThaNKS AGAIN FOR THE INSPIRATION.

I am coming to the conclusion that in the kitchen there are definitely two types of cook: the batch cook and the non batch cook, which is probably why there'll always be people who will just not want to have a stab at the big batch day, and this is why. I will try and make sure in the final wording to make it very, very clear that the big guide is simply there to help people who want to get as much cooking done in the single day, and that choosing to do it a bit at a time will have absolutely no effect on the success with the planner.

I need to check my stocks when I get home to see if I have enough ingredients in, and if I do, I will run a test batch on my day off on Monday. If anyone wants to join me then, or at any time before or after, and then report back on which amendments are necessary, I'd be very, very grateful :) Mango Joe, if you are up for it on Monday, that'd be very cool - we'd be with each other in spirit, and could have an imaginary race :D

Further amendments made re pastry and bread, btw.
