Nesima wrote:My understanding of the origin and meaning of the phrase 'nitty gritty' is that it was used to describe the 'rights'/action of white slave owners raping the daughters of slaves they owned.
Given its original usage and meaning I would suggest it is at best extremely insensitive to use such a term in our society today. even if some people use it to mean something different.
I think sometimes that as well as a "Thanks" and a "Quote" button there should be a "Get A Life" button too.:rotfl:0 -

Oh for heaven's sake!
My own language is descended from Latin and many words that are now perfectly respectable were used to describe slaves and "lesser" peoples. That was 2000 years ago.
Is the Italian state to be sued en masse by the descendants of former Roman Imperial subjects?
Just call us Wops and we're quits, ok?

I'm afraid that nesima appears to be of the type who spend their time assiduously searching for something to be offended by.
All of my life I have loved reading books of all sorts on all kinds of subjects, amongst which I include books on quotations and the origins and definitions of unusual expressions, and I have never been made aware of that particular definition for 'nitty gritty'.'Puritanism: the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy'.

There are some people who are so against what they perceive as 'pc' that they will try to pretend they're being 'pc' in the most ridiculous of ways. Simply to make people react to it.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

That is also true GR. But we have to react and sneer at these attempts, or those who really are rabidly PC at heart will escalate their absurd demands. After all, the banning of the English flag by some councils is a fact.
Anyway auora, I bet you never thought what you were letting loose by starting this tread with such good intentions...
