I'd just like to point out that you are incorrect.Nesima wrote:My understanding of the origin and meaning of the phrase 'nitty gritty' is that it was used to describe the 'rights'/action of white slave owners raping the daughters of slaves they owned.
Given its original usage and meaning I would suggest it is at best extremely insensitive to use such a term in our society today. even if some people use it to mean something different.

I suggest creating a new language called "newspeak" where terms that might be construed as racist by anyone are not permitted. By removing the words the ideas cant be expressed, thus stopping "thought crime" at source

We will end up with no language at all.0 -
I was reading a student's work (MSc) and commented that it had been written in Southern Irish dialect ... absolutely no problem as far as I'm concerned, so long as it follows academic style.
I thought afterwards that if there were to be a dispute I could be in trouble for drawing attention to it at all. Madness!de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar

I use the google toolbar spell check when I remember, if you see any edits on my posts it's because I have spotted a howler and it annoys me on my own stuff. I don't worry about other people's spelling or grammar and it does grate when I see people being taken to task about their spelling. It's usually someone who doesn't agree with their point and wants to appear cleverer. In my opinion it says more about the poster who has a go to be honest.
I love nelly's spelling it makes me laugh when he tries 3 ways and get's it wromg anyway.0 -
