No, that's just what my boyfriend (constantly) says! Apparently I still expect everything to cost what it did back in 1989! (Well why not?)

My children aren't old enough to start slinging insults at me yet, but that day will surely come soon enough :rotfl:

But if I worried about spell checking, I'd never post :D

Understanding is the most important thing.
I'd much have a badly spelled and badly written post that I can understand over one with perfect spelling that I have to read three times to figure out what it's all about.

Thank you. I tend to edit two out of three posts because of typos.

Who gives a damn:confused: Language is a living, evolving thing. It is a phrase in everyday use, and not one person in a thousand would regard it as racist:rotfl:

I suppose we have another social services clerk who can't have black or white coffee. "I take it without milk, actually."

Or are you just the replacement Deemy?:D

    Ah come on, chill.

Think "extremely racist" is dubious at best.

"The origins of the Nitty-Gritty phrase do not seem to be as appalling as some imagined.

The origins of the phrase are almost impossible to track down, and it does seem to have its roots as a Black American English expression.
The first written occurrence of the phrase can be found around 1950, although there are claims that the term has been used in print as far back as the 1920's. Dr Jonathan Lighter, editor of the Historical Dictionary of American Slang, recorded its usage in 1956 as having the non-racially overtoned meaning of 'the heart of the matter', and, 'the core issues' as it is defined these days in most dictionaries.
Although the phrase may have been in use well before then, it is almost inconceivable that, had it been used as suggested with respect to slave ships, that there are no examples of such usage at all. If the term Nitty-Gritty, is offensive, there is absolutely no evidence which supports that view. It seems that its unacceptable racial overtones are a product of folklore rather than factual".

My understanding of the origin and meaning of the phrase 'nitty gritty' is that it was used to describe the 'rights'/action of white slave owners raping the daughters of slaves they owned.

Given its original usage and meaning I would suggest it is at best extremely insensitive to use such a term in our society today. even if some people use it to mean something different.
