Similes are the ones where you say something... like... something else

I can't think of example because I am poorly, and I have feeling in my head like mashed potato (do you like what I did there - That's a university education for you ;)

All I want to say is sweet like chocolate balls which of course is just a song :D

I didn't get a first, and I am quite dull - so I am not sure the argument follows either way x

Here is another viewpoint i'll throw into the melting pot. I could guarantee to you all, if you gave 100 people a questionnaire to complete, you would be lucky to receive one correctly completed. So why is that?
I guess this could be classed as another sweeping generalisation Ani.
Having just spent several days at the International Eisteddfod teaching people about the democratic process in Wales and then asking them to complete a questionnaire, (asking questions about what they had just learned) I would say that statistic is completely wrong as ALL of my pupils, yes 100% (all ages from 7 upwards and all learning abilities - including special needs/hard of hearing etc etc got 100% correct) So I guess it is, as FW suggests, about adapting teaching styles to the audience

Ani - One of the only things I remember being taught was about using apostrophes in shortened words - the memory is strong because I think the english teacher used my work as an example of how to get it wrong. The rule is that you put the apostrophe where the letter should be that you have taken out.

So you are turns into you're, was not to wasn't, have not to haven't etc.

I do not remember ever being taught about similes and metaphors and had to ask my niece what they were when she was doing them at high school. For example, 'the road was a river of moolight' is one of them and I think it is a metaphor, but I'm not altogether sure...

apathy. I have provided surveys to all the delegates at the recent seminar series I did, and in every one of 14 locations the response rate was abysmal. I suppose I should go through the attendance list and work out exactly how bad... At major conferences we offer [STRIKE]bribes[/STRIKE] incentives to complete the 10 minute surveys... And people often don't fill in feedback forms, which are what my boss uses to assess my performance!

Yeah when I attend Early Years conferences they only hand out the free goodies AFTER you've completed your feedback form :)

You weren't a recent census collector were you :rotfl:.

You could of course turn the whole discussion on its head and argue that communication and language are shifting faster today than at any time in history - teenage-text-speak anyone <insert shruggy shoulder icon>

The institutions - parents, schools, universities, government are desperately trying to maintain their position of power and control by insisting language and communication remain exactly as they understand it. Could be they are losing the battle and that standard English will remain but it will become a speciality art. Maybe the next plain English campaign will include text-speak and ghetto sayings. Who knows <insert another shruggy shoulder icon>

Maybe a written questionnaire is an out-dated mode of communication that no longer has a viable place in our society and needs to be replaced by a social-networking platform survey or another method of communication that is widely accessible and understood by the masses.

I agree with you about the methods of collecting data. Why write if you can do it all online. Would save a heck of a lot of trees :T
I have to confess though I hate text speak being used in a non-text "environment" but then again in order to see why my DS hates change you only have to see where the chip off the old block came from :o Change? Can't possibly embrace that :rotfl:

we have this debate endlessly ... The problem is, we don't really want people connected to the Internet while we're giving presentations (then again, maybe we should be more confident that people are there because they want to hear what we have to say!). At big conferences surveys are done online in booths with goodies provided on completion. At small events we have to rely on the organisers handing out and collecting the surveys, and collating and returning the results... Sometimes the apathy is probably down to our staff rather than the attendees

There are lots of tools for online and interactive surveys, and generally electronic surveys do work if they are something the participant is interested in, are well-constructed (options for not applicable and qualifying comments help) and are short.

Maybe its classed as a sweeping generalisation to you, but i know it to be true.

I did not mention statistics. Nor did i mention children.

Butti : In an ideal world, I would like to see people able to change focus whenever they needed to and as many times as they needed to! However, having changed course more times than I can remember without serious thought, I have carried some vital skill/attitude/ bit of knowledge with me each time.

FW : my 4 children span 35 – 50 years old and each has had a different experience of education. There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth from me as each has gone through the education system but – surprise, surprise – each one has been ‘successful’ in finding his or her comfort zone and is now fulfilled.

My DH retired from uni teaching (undergraduates) a couple of years ago and is still in touch with around 500 former students who still contact him for advice or to tell him what they are doing now. Some of them are in touch with me as well (or instead!). We have attended weddings and christenings. We have ‘called in’ on people on our travels. We have (with some trepidation) advised people through difficult situations. We have had great fun in many places with these former students. The concept of ‘pastoral care’ has disappeared in a structured way and it has been a delight to fill the gap.

Ani : If a questionnaire is incorrectly completed, that is a failure of the questionnaire design. A questionnaire is intended to discover views not judge responses.

NorhternLass : It probably says something about my OCD but I bookmarked this nearly 2 years ago and remembered it when I saw your post.
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?

The only problem with the internet, is the quality of the data. The internet is totally open to abuse, as anyone can say anything and ' pretend ' to be anyone.

Well that's the domain of persons more IT savvy than me <shrug> but with respect to the quality of the data.....surely anyone filling in a paper survery could pretend to be someone they're not as well. However you cannot deny that the rise in all things "online" is having a big impact on how we do things daily. And if in order to get around apathy and actually be able to collect meaningful data why not try it?
