University degrees are different nowadays than when I left school. I longed to go to Uni but never had the opportunity because of financial reasons. Does this make me less intelligent than those friends that did go? No. Did it colour the way that I thought about myself in relation to my friends that did go? Yes and it took me many, many years to see myself as an equal. Like Greenbee, when recruiting I am more interested in how people have applied themselves, be that to education or to work unless the degree/qualification is relevant to the role.
Not too long ago people had the same attititude to polytechnics as Ani and others have towards todays degrees. What was the result of that prejudice? People stopped going to Techs, they were closed down and we have lost a whole generation of skilled craftsmen and service men. Those Techs had to find a way forward and this resulted in todays raft of "new" degrees. Education is a different entity these days to when I left school but that doesnt make it any less valuable. As responsible adults, employers and family members it is up to us to ensure that the young person is steered into the right direction for them. Too many people are saying that degrees are worthless, university a waste of time but if it came to the choice between their child going to uni or not you can bet that they would want their child to have that opportunity. I am encouraged to see that in March it was announced that this year Oxford Uni finally offer 58.5% of places to pupils from state run schools. This totally different to previous years when the majority of places were given to pupils from s just 13 private schools who had been paying up to £29000 per year for tuition. Does the fact that people can pay for the childrens education make that child any more intelligent? Sadly no.
Lets all stop running down degrees and courses and start looking at the person who is/has done that degree. Why did they do it? Lets face it some youngsters go to Uni because they dont know what else to do or it is expected of them or they just dont want to start working for a living.
Sorry rant over. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher0 -

:j:j Some great news today though FW - one of my students has just received an unconditional for Edinburgh Medical School :j:j She has worked so hard over the last three years. I am so delighted at how happy she is.
She has decided to spend the rest of the day practising how to write really badly in preparation for one day being able to write prescriptions........ and I suspect after an afternoon in the wine bar with her family that will truly be the case.
Days like this makes all the tutoring worthwhile.

"That's me that is :rotfl:".................. wonder what I will grow up to be?:D. I certainly didn't know at the age of 18 what I wanted to do for the rest of my life ....... although I have had a lovely time "exploring" so far.

Have to come in on the quality of teaching reading and writing in schools discussion. Sorry Ani but I totally, totally disagree with you. Grammar, punctuation and spelling is only one small part of the English language. My dd is 16 and the quality of her writing far surpasses mine at the same age. Her use of similes, metaphors and imagery in creative writing is stunning; her an ability to construct an argument is formidable; she can write plays; she can produce a journalistic piece of writing that could be published in a high quality newspaper tomorrow.
No she did not attend a private school, no I am not looking through Mummy goggles and yes she is one, in a class of many, who can write to the same standard.
Dd didn't learn these skills by doing the hours and hours of boring spelling and punctuation exercises that I had to when I was at school. Yes, my hand-writing was neat, I could spell and correctly punctuate a sentence but I couldn't turn my hand to the vast array of different writing styles that dd can fearlessly tackle.
So let's stop putting these kids and their teachers down, it is ignorant and disrespectful. Let's stop harking back to the "good old days" because iirc it wasn't all that.
Eta: oops, sorry that turned into a bit of a rant...
Nope, I haven't finished yet. Food for thought - why should someone who cannot read and write not go to university? Not being able to read and write, for whatever reason, does not mean that that person cannot think, reason, learn, voice their opinion, put forward solutions, so on and so forth0 -

Must be hon - it seems to work when I click on the link. Beyond that its too techie for me. Will PM MrF

I could also get shot down in flames by saying, these days, i feel entrance to university, in many cases, is an entrance to uk residency. There we go. I've said it. Got the boxing gloves on..................
Sorry you feel this way Ani cause this really touches a nerve with our current situation.
We are in a position where we cannot access suitable and appropriate Autism services for our ds (19) who was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome two years ago. In a couple of years when our dd (16) goes to work or Uni, we have to decide whether to move in order to access the higher quality of care and training that is available elsewhere - this will involve changing our residency as we are part of the British Isles but not part of the UK or EU. So there you go, over to you, what would you do in my circumstances?0 -
Hello
Wish I could take the woman's advice as well.
Am in good job and secure too which in this day and age is rare, only owe car (just over 2 grand and student loan same amount) have savings for deposit for house going on (not much just over 6 grand but praying miracle will happen at some point before I give up and just go shared equaity) and have works and private pension (private just over 3 grand)
Credit card debt less than 700 quid but most of that is due to having to put a deposit down on a rental flat which means am due about same amount back from place I'm in,
In my early thirties, have my health and the ability to get up and go when I want but somehow money controls every decision. Don't go on holidays don't buy new clothes don't go out an socialise too much due to cost as supposed to be saving for a home of my own - which would probably be more enjoyable if I had someone to be with but fear of spending money actually is preventing me meeting someone.
Just wish I could just let go and enjoy life but somehow money gets in the way.0
