I've been thinking about your blog and the amount of time it must be taking up. Think of it like the beginning of a new piece of research where you have lots of ideas, but you can't do it all at once. The difference with this is that it has no defined end...so why not put all your ideas into a plan - quick wins early on (2 or 3 a week) and things that need more research later on. Plan it like you do your marathon training, because this IS a marathon, not a sprint.

Excellent news FW - for both you and your student! :T Well done to both of you! :j :j

Cheery, the two before that got straight As (typos only). This one was un-usual and wanted to discover the world entirely alone. Supervision was hard - but still did well. I feel very proud!

Right. Do you know what we did tonight? Almost blew our monthly budget, this is what. My friend who stayed in our house went today but two colleagues from Paris are here and wanted to have dinner together. Took them to a place near us and the bill for the four of us (OH came of course) was heart renching. They offered to pay and having become so very native I said 'Are you sure?'. So being French, one of them said 'OK we'll share.' So we shared - which I think is better.

Can you guess why I said 'almost'? Yes! We happen to have the money in the 'I am so worth it' account - but this means that if a trip to the cinema is made it will have to be from a cut elsewhere. Mmmmm

We have lovely evening with very nice wine, though.

That sounds like it almost became scary, FW! Makes me laugh at the thought of you saying "are you sure" because you've come over all native :)

It is all coming together. Today, I did not manage to get up at 6.00 am because last night we were entertaining till late, after which I had to finish something. So, got up; had enough time to read my PhDs work (she is having her first year upgrade soon) and then started doing some marking that had to be finished today. Meeting with student was had, marking was finished (last marking I am doing for eighteen months) and then I had another meeting with my French visitors for lunch. Interesting chat, we had.

But the best thing that I did was to eat a frog and organise something have been postponing for about a week. All finished now and I can relax for the weekend.

Today is my middle son’s birthday (my younger step-son) – he is twenty five and he is a writer who really rocks. Well, mainly poet, really. He came back home for his birthday and we had very good roast lamb with roast potatoes (OH’s specialty roasts) and fried cabbage with cumin (my specialty). I also made chocolate mousse from scratch – which was delicious.

And then Middle Son’s friends came to go out with him. I was looking at them, my heart filling with pride, thinking ‘wow, they all have become wonderful young men’. It was so lovely to see – and our two as well. As to the rest – some of them have found their way in life, others are taking a bit longer but they are all decent, lovely young men.

Have a great Friday evening, my friends and enjoy your weekend. Speak tomorrow.

This was written a while ago but is the best summation of the Greek economy that I have seen.

It's main interest for us (possibly) is the emphasis the Greeks have on self employment and, in particular, the term 'polyergy' - which Cheery and Pippi have called patchwork earnings.

If you read it through and reflect that those of us looking at 'micro businesses' and polyergy to get out of the problems we face are probably not unique in the UK - in fact I know others who are doing the same - the Greek situation is of interest.

The link was sent by a Greek friend.
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?

Thanks Tricia, for the link; wiil have a look later. However, it is very similar in Bulgaria - people make a living from variety of sources.

In fact, this is one of the main points in Tim Ferriss' book - that earning should be seen as temporary, fluid and fexible opportunities rather than stable, permanent employment.
