  • I'm starting to push Bank Transfer because apparently it is the most common method of payment used by other European countries - not just for eBay but bill paying in general - and I want to make my items as attractive to as many buyers as possible.
    Numpties...I'm surrounded by them...save me...

Thanks Print Screen - i did intend on putting something in the auctions about bank transfers but was unsure how to word it as i didnt want to put buyers off. I understand that a lot of people are rather dubious of ebay as it is, and didnt want to word it the wrong way so that people avoid paying that way thinking they may be being scammed  but then again nobody can blame them for being cautious.

If you do have any suggestions as to the best way to word it i would be open to suggestions :)

If you struggle finding the item you want because of the facias/covers/remotes etc....
    there are 2 solutions........

    1) Use the catagories on the left hand side so just phones show up.

    2) Use a few search terms....not many people use these...but for example, if you are searching for a mobile phone you might want to try this:

Sony Ericsson K800i -facia -cover -contract -free -ringtones

when you put the "-" before a word it removes the items containing that word.

If you want to remove items that are from people in Hong Kong or US then use the do your search, then on the left hand side theres a "location" option where you can perform a search that only shows items from people in the UK.

    Hope those tips help

Yes that's right. You also pay extra if you have a reserve and it is not met, or if you use any listing extras.

This is correct about bank transfer being common in the Eurozone. It is an accepted and recommended form of payment on eBay Germany for example.

However here in the UK people are petrified about giving out bank details. They believe that once people have access to this they can rob you blind! But they have no problem with cheques which can bounce even when they appear to have cleared and giving out copies of their signature when they are sent.

This is a shame as we are one of the few countries where when credit cards were first introduced, we were forward thinking enough to widely accepted them in shops etc. But when it comes to bank transfers we are decidedly backward in our thinking. Companies's account details are widely available through Google. No one needs to go to the bother of going through eBay to try and get them.

It is ironic that with goods brought via Postal Order which are NOT COVERED under eBay's Standard Purchase protection, there is not a stigma or fear surrounding payment with them and a seller ripping you off. Sellers accepting Postal orders are not usually considered scammers.
Yet people regard those offering bank transfers which IS COVERED by eBay's Standard Purchase protection (although eBay does not make it that clear that) are considered scammers!

Essexhoney, until people in general become more comfortable with the idea of bank transfers  Unfortunately there is only so much you can do to promote bank transfers and reassure people. Perhaps logo stating bank transfers accepted. See here about what other eBayers in a similar situation have done.

I always mention bank transfers in my listings and yet probably only get about 1 buyer every few months actually use it. I can't really complain though as I wouldn't use a bank transfer if I was buying as you've no way of getting your money back if it all goes wrong.

But there IS a way to get your money back. It IS covered by eBay up to £120 (minus £15 Ebay fee) under their standard protection. So for small value items where you are unlikely to be ripped off then there is no reason why you shouldn't pay by transfer.

Also please tell me if you send a postal order (which you have to pay for), how are you supposed to get your money back if it all goes wrong?

I would never ever use a PO or a cheque either. Since as you admit ebay take a £15 admin charge then I wouldn't get my money back if I didn't get my item, I would only get back anything over £15. Therefore buying items under £15 and paying by any other means than paypal would result in me losing my money.

For me getting my money back means getting 'all' my money back, not just that part that ebay want me to have.
