    Control the sugar intake though.

Oh believe me I do! Although the bleeding dentist we have to see doesn't :(

They are only allowed sweets twice a week after tea as a treat (and we are talking one small packet here) I was fed sweets almost as a continual food when I was a kid and only have a few fillings. Yet my DS who is 12 and had to have soya milk and products as a child now has 4 teeth removed and DD who is 5 already has a temporary filling! We've followed all the dentists advice, they've had regular checkups, it makes me wonder what the hell is going on lately?

my 2 eat a lot of fruit, which is what i normally give them between meals - would the natural sugars in the fruit be just as harmful as the sugar in sweets/biscuits/cakes?

    Depends what fruit.

Apples nowadays have been grown to be sweeter and sweeter. They are not as harmless as they once were.

Citrus fruits are very acidic, and can cause demineralisation, which will errode the teeth if taken to excess, but won't cause decay.

    Dried fruit is OK.

Bread & butter is great. Marmite soldiers are brilliant, carrot sticks, celery sticks, chunks of red/green pepper. Veg strips are generally much less acidic than fruit.

Crisps are OK dentally(But have other health issues!!), so long as you stick with ready salted, or S&V. Some of the other flavours have sugar in them, and the highly processed corn snacks such as Monster Munch can be just as bad as sweets.

The thing with sugar is that it's not how much you have, but when you have it.

If you are the size of a bacteria in the mouth, 1/4 of a polo mint is as much of a feast as a boxful of Mars Bars!

    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

That's right, if you have green tea in between meals.

If you have it only at mealtimes, then it doesn't really matter, as there will be other sugar going in at that time too.

Sugar in tea/coffee is one of the biggest causes of decay due to the frequency and times these drinks are taken.

Soya products are sweetened, and can be harmful.

There are genetic factors which can modify peoples decay experience. (My sister's diet through her teenage years was chocolate & Coca Cola, and she never had a filling.

She was recently back from Australia for Xmas though, and she's been getting divorced, and munching loads of mints as stress relief. I ended up having to do 3 fillings for her and removed a decayed wisdom tooth on Boxing Day!! So factors obviously change!).

The bottom line though is No sugar =No decay.

Just a quick hello, before I get into the day.

Ageandjo have you tried speaking to one of your local Councillors - they will often get involved in things like disputes with Housing Associations.

Jockett - good luck with the move, I hope the weather is good for you, we always seem to be moving things in torrential rain!

DS is at the Big Chill Festival until Monday so I want to try and get on with lots of housework this weekend.

Re: teeth DD has always brushed religiously and eats very little sugar or anything unhealthy yet nearly always has to have a filling when she sees the dentist, DS is far more lax but never has to have a filling. She has lovely straight teeth but he had to have braces, it seems likely to me that genetic factors are involved in both (I have lots of fillings and had to wear a brace DH straight and strong teeth, it doesn't see fair).

    Morning everyone

I have a house full of kids and it's all quiet ...... spooky. It's ok - I've just found them in next door's garden playing footie (ours isn't a footie-friendly garden)

So far this morning I have done very little OS. BM is on and DW is ready to switch on. I'm sure I can find enough laundry for a couple of loads too.

However, the business is getting going :j :j I am now a name and a ".co.uk" (but I'm not telling you what it is cos I know from others that there are some nasty people out there who try to ruin everything for you :() Also, there isn't anything there yet :rotfl: I have my physical office space set up, I have an appointment with Business Link tomorrow, my graphic designer has come up with a fab name and logo (and hopefully the website soon) Need to sort my phone lines out and open a bank account today/tomorrow too. Then there's sooo much to do regards more research, marketing, planning, compiling databases etc etc.

I have had LOADS and LOADS of help from my business coach (ooh err missus, very posh) You'll all know her as that flighty miss, Nelski, but in real life, that's what she does :D So, three cheers for Nels ...Hip Hip ....... It's costing me a fortune in wine, mind :D:D In fact, she's so good, we brainstormed around Gullivers World on Monday, with DS2. And Nels made a very nice picnic too - yes, really!

So, OS has taken a back seat lately. Still have my mum to run round after and managed to push the vac around the house last night. I may attempt the ironing pile later today, after I've put a saus casserole in the SC. I'm going to the lakes for a few days with my mum and the boys on saturday, and there's nothing packed.

Riht, ((hugs)) to all in need and I'll pop in here when I can. I often have a quick read but don't get time to post, but apologies if i miss any startling news (you'll just have to pm or msn me with it :D)

Hope you are all keeping well, have a good day.

    Good morning all

I have been carefully reading all the stuff about teeth & decay - thanks toothsmith - which has been very interesting. I agree with the thing about genetic factors, as DH is one of the lucky ones, who didn't even go to the dentist for years, but when I booked him an appointment he had hardly anything wrong with his teeth - just a lot of plaque. Whereas I go regularly & always need something done, yet he probably consumes more sugar than I do! On the other hand, my teeth are nice and straight, but he should have worn a brace as a child - but didn't. (DS2 whose jaw is similar to his dad's has had a lot of orthodontic work to make his teeth straight.)

Anyway, hope you all have a good day. The weather is a bit miserable here to say the least.

Morning All..Just................... ((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))) to those who need them......

At the Docs early this morning, report through from the hospital so medication prescribed....also have lost a little more weight.......so everything on track.....OH playing bowls this afternoon so will have a little time to myself......I made up one of my cushion covers yesterday, look good with the pad in, so quite pleased, I have two done and started on a third last night. A different pattern to the first two....I need to think now about some designs for Christmas cards and also some stand alone lace doileys for our craft stall at the fair.

I put an adjustable cake tin on ebay and have a bid on it, so pleased about that, it will take cakes from 4 - 12 inches square, I had it when I made my sons wedding cake in 1994.... not used it since.......

Much cooler here this morning, heavy jumper on and trousers rather than shorts.......quite windy too.

Off to cook smoked haddock for lunch with some bread and butter.
