Drink driving advice sought
Slightly cowering here as Ive seen the treatment other MSEs have had from the lecuture brigade when asking for advice on this topic, but this website has been so helpful to me in the past I had to give it a go...
Partner was banned 4 years 3 months ago for being over the limit. Very unlucky to be stopped for a brake light the morning after a christmas party and still testing slightly over the limit.
He drove for a couple of years once he got his license back but we couldnt afford the insurance once he became a student, so now I drive and he doesnt. However, my baby is due in 4 weeks so Im keen he gets insured on my car in case we need to dash to hospital and I cant drive. My car is a lower insurance group than the last one he drove but despite that the best quote we've had so far is over £800! He is 36 and has never had an accident, but I think the thing making it difficult is the fact his NCB has lapsed due to him not having insurance for the past 2 years.
Does anyone know any companies who can help? Can anyone suggest if we can get his 16 years of claim free driving somehow taken into account?
Also does anyone know how long we have to declare the DR10 for? It was a first offence and he brethalised at around 45, so only just over the legal limit as far as I can make out.
Please dont batter me, Im pregnant and emotional and you just might make me cry!

NCB has lapsed due to him not having insurance for the past 2 years.
IIRC, drink driving points remain on license for 10 years.
TBH, with that offence, £800 is quite a low premium!Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
Are you trying to get him his own insurance? or have him as a named driver on your policy?
Best idea I can give really is to do a confused.com comparison for the policy you want and see what the premiums are coming up with. Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??:mad:Debt Free as of September 2011 :jSealed Pot 2009 number 334 - £100 Saved! yey!!Sealed Pot 2010 number 334 - £116.51 Saved! Fair point but living in the middle of nowhere at least an hour in any direction from medical services, I would be more comfortable with access to a vehicleTBH, with that offence, £800 is quite a low premium!
Just surprised me that it went from £500 on his last car to £800+ on mine, when mine is 6 groups lower.
Thanks anyway.Stuck in a hole:(:( Just a step from getting out

It will have jumped up £300+ due to the other conviction. Try and get him a quote on the last car he was driving and it would probably be £1000+
Best bet is to just do a few comparison quotes, then the company that gives the best price go to direct and get another quote.
Good luck, I know how long insurance hunting can take! This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
he should never be able to drive after been caught for drink driving, he should be banned for life, sorry if this upsets you, but i lost 2 nephews aged 3 and 7 to a drink driver, so i have no sympathy or respect for anyone that drinks and drives:mad::mad:0

Other conviction? Apart from one misemeanour hes had a clean driving history all his life.
We're getting quotes direct at the mo, its just taking FOREVER lol! Cant use comparison websites as they wont quote for convicted drivers (or if Im wrong on that please do set me straight!)
Thanks for tips thoughStuck in a hole:(:( Just a step from getting out

As others have said, use the comparison websites to get quotes.
I’m not sure how long the DR10 will be taken into account, but all you have to do is honestly answer the questions on the web sites.
If it asks “any convictions in the last three years” then you are ok and don’t have to tell them, if it asks about the last five years then you’ll have to tell them.
If you are intending to go back to being a two car family it might be worth looking at companies that award NCB to named drivers so he can build some up as well.0 -

I think you are wrong, just out of interest I’ve just run my details through confused.com and added a DR10 to my otherwise spotless record.
Mine is a group 20 car and without the DR10 I pay about £250, with the DR10 it went up to about £370
So, confused.com accepts the DR10 with no fuss and, for me, it would increase the premium by about 50%0 -
Thank you Vaio, I didnt realise that. Will try it now.Stuck in a hole
