what is my down load speed

sorry to ask a silly question ,,when i check my Internet speed with my provider it gives me 10322 kbps down load speed my son says this is less then i gig and very poor is this true???

No that is very good. You will not get a speed of 1Gbps on a residential line; even some of the fastest Business Lease Lines do not achieve that sort of speed - unless you are a point of presence on the internet i.e. a Datacenter.

Your speed is fine, quite good to be honest.

Mine is currently 490kbps wanna swap your speed is fine, mine is slow because I am using BTopenzone at the mo cos my router is down. Fortunately the neighbours use BT for home broadband and are providing me with Openzone .

thank you proliant that obviously why the providers giving me little response,, i Can now try to find out why my Internet keeps going down when the phone rings ,,, by getting that speed then do i take it that my phone lines must be good as well??

hi phantom i have run a long extension from the master socket to up stairs and the filter is there on the end then in to the router

no - some lines run at double that. It is certainly a lot better than many though.

Regarding the fault - make sure that everything that is plugged into a phone socket is filtered. If you've done that call the ISP to report the problem. They will take you through some basic steps to eliminate the chance that it is a fault with your own wiring and then call out BT Openreach for you to fix the problem.

This is 100% the worst way of doing things for speed. With that setup you need to fit an iPlate to the master socket. Far better would be to site the router at the master and run ethernet to your PC.

It won't be the cause of the ADSL dropping out when the phone rings though.

i phoned bt this morning and was told im with talk talk now,, it seems from what you all have suggested that the fault lies within the house and probably not with the provider ,, i must add Ive had more help in a few minits off here than my sons had with talk talk in 12 months perhaps i should have come here first

Hi plumbercarl

I'm not really a techie, but maybe try putting your extension-line filter into the socket before the extension line, rather than at the router end.

I don't know whether that will make a difference, but all the diagrams I have seen suggest you set it up with the filter in the "wall socket" rather than immediately before the router.

It's a simple experiment to try and it may make some difference.

As kwik says, each telephone plugged into a socket will need its own filter, unless you only have the 1 phone plugged into the same filter as your router.
