mmm well to be quite honest that is what happens when you employ a company to fit a boiler who are not CORGI registered and who are offering deals that appear to be to good to true, we recently had a new boiler fitted in our house here in central london and we are very very happy with the servuce that we recieved, so much so that i strongly reccommend this company if you want a CORGI registered person to come and fit a new boiler, Owen Lord Property Maintenance Services did a magnificent job at installing our new boiler, they where friendly and professional from the beginning to the end, even advising us on which boiler would be more efficient, we eventually went for a new Glow Worm boiler and it is working perfectly!! to be honest we where a little put off by the price in the beginning as of course it is the recession and money is tight but the owner Owen calmly directed me to this website to see the reasons behind the costs of fitting a new boiler, type ''mike the boiler man'' in google and you will find it; we were surprised to learn that itt is illegal to have someone come out and fit a boiler who is not corgi registered and also the boiler must be a combi boiler to comply with regulations if it isnt you face a massive problem when you come to sell your property! anyway enough of an essay, this is the companies phone number, by the way they cover all of London and the home counties!! 07865 418 417. Best Wishes, Jane.

    Welcome to the forum.

Firstly you are incorrect about the "boiler must be a combi boiler" - I assume you mean condensing boiler?

Secondly people on this Board tend to get very suspicious of people who join MSE and their first post is nothing but singing the praises of a firm. Especially when the only contact is a mobile phone number.

A quick Google reveals, in London, an Owen Lord has several services(carpets, painting, heating etc) but no address details etc(not clear if this is the same organisation)

Do you have any more details?

For anyone considering a new boiler there is a very good family run company that offer very good advice. Their website is packed with information on what 'the perfect installation' should consist of, like an A_Z guide.

The site also allows you to build your own quote online and you can compare other companies.

If anyone is interested CLICK the site: new boiler

They fitted my neighbours boiler and have since installed my sisters boiler a few miles away.

Goodluck to all those having their boilers changed, its a difficult and expensive process.

What a minefield getting a combi boiler fitted can be. I have been trying for over a week now for someone to come out and give me a boiler quote for my new heating system. One company wanted to charge me £70 plus VAT for the privelege of coming to my house and giving me a quote. How very nice of them to charge me for giving money to them. NICE.

This is obviously wrong so I urge you money savers to avoid companies like this. They do this to eliminate the times wasters however who knows what they will be charging?

For any plumbers on here please is there anyone in my area who knows a little about boilers and can replace my old heating system? Please can someone receommend someone>????????

And for anyone looking for a great article on how to avoid the cowboys take a look here:

Hi there I have been having a new central heating system fitted this week the fitter is due to finish today. I had three quotes and for me this one represented the best value for money ( not the cheapest by the way).Rip out old back boiler, radiators and all pipework.Broag Avanta 35c Condensing Boiler , 5 year parts & 2 yr labour guarantee.Replace all pipework in copper.Fit Magna Clean.9 new Radiators (3 in new positions)Honeywell wireless thermostat controls - CM927.TRV valves on all rads.Total price £3257.My back boiler was over 30 years old so I applied for the £400 boiler scrappage scheme that was announced in the last pre budget and was accepted therefore taking the job down to £2857.
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy...

Hi there, unfortunately the company is a local heating engineer that was recommended to me. You could always try the GAS SAFE website, which is what all Gas / Heating engineers should be registered with ( used to be corgi). Before I gave my guy the go ahead I checked the details of the company to ensure they were authorised to carry out the type of work I wanted.By the way heating is working lovely. Good luck in finding someone.

  • Hello,

I am a qualified Gas Safe Registered Engineer and a fully qualified City & Guilds Heating and Plumbing Engineer. As such over my years in the trade I have been asked the same question time and time again.

    Which boiler is the best?

At first glance the question seems simple enough. Lots of engineers will tell you one manufacturer or another but in my humble opinion any boiler if installed correctly and maintained correctly will stand the test of time.
The question that should be asked is what boiler is strong enough to withstand, careless installs, bad or no maintenance or customers that don't think about their boiler until it packs up.
I don not want to preach here but unfortunately in a lot of cases this is the case and no one really has any appreciation of what is really necessary for a good install and promotes a good healthy and long life for the boiler.

If care and proper attention to design, installation and commissioning has been conducted, appropriate for the dwelling it is meant to serve, any boiler, from the cheap raven heats and sabres to those considered to be top end like vaillant, or w bosh, with a proper maintenance plan will last a very very long time indeed.
Think of it like a car, don't change the oil on a honda or a mercedes and both will surfer a very short life. Take them for regular service and use them within the parameter they were designed for and they will still get you from A to B for a long time.

For all those considering a new boiler I hope this has been something to chew over.

    Thanks for your time

    Welcome to the forum.

Normally when a gas safe fitter contributes to this forum they play the ‘safety card’ with dire warnings of the dangers.

I have to say I find your analogy of boiler servicing to car servicing(oil changed etc) unconvincing to say the least.

Obviously you are correct that a good installation is important, but how do we find out who is a reputable plumber who won’t cut corners to give a cheaper quote. Gas Safe registration is no more a guarantee than CORGI was beforehand.

Where I do take issue is with your assertion that regular servicing is essential for giving the boilers a long life.
any boiler, from the cheap raven heats and sabres to those considered to be top end like vaillant, or w bosh, with a proper maintenance plan will last a very very long time indeed.

Nearly all the complaints on MSE and elsewhere on the web for condensing boilers concern failure of electronic circuit boards, often costing £hundreds. What in the servicing schedule is there to prevent such failures?

I have a friend who is a gas safe fitter who had just such a failure on his own newish boiler and was cursing the rip-off prices of circuit boards even at trade price.

Trawl the plumbers forums and see the complaints from fitters about the unreliability of modern condensing boilers. Even if you pay British Gas, or other similar firms, £200 a year they exclude exchangers, and are reluctant to continue coverage above 10 years.

If your contention that a regular maintenance plan will keep boilers running for ‘a very very long time’ why don’t the manufacturers back this up with a decent guarantee? Most are for two years and a couple for five.
