But the clock on the meter doesn't change so in winter it's 1230 to 0730 which is not so handy. If you don't have the two meters, you can't get economy 7. I was told they're not installing them anymore but when they changed our meter over recently, they did put a new double one in, so that may not be true. Certainly if you use electricity for water heating or storage heating it would save loads of money.I never thought of checking when the switch over time is  I just took Eon's word of midnight to 700 and 0100 to 0800. I shall be watching the meter for the exact time. I rushed to get in the shower at 5 to 8 this morning to use the cheaper electric before the switch over but maybe I could have stayed smelly for longer :rotfl:
Checked mine this morning and it changed over at 830 so big thanks for heads up on this. I always panic about getting my washing machine on in time so it finishes at 8 (or 7 in winter) and now I get another half an hour :T
Wonder if it starts at 0130 but I'm always in my bed so doesn't really matter and I'm not going out to stand in the garage at that time of night to check! There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion0 -
I've only just found this thread and had a good laugh, although i do lots of the things people have talked about.
Now i don't know if this is taking the pis* when it comes to recycling but i wee in a bottle and save it to go in the compost bin.

I have a part set of dentures and soak them in a small glass with a dissolved denture cleaning tablet for 15 mins. I push the water in the toilet pan down as much as possible with the brush, then pour the denture water down (take the dentures out first!) and give the toilet a good scrub. Leave it for as long as poss before flushing. It really works and saves on toilet cleaners or bleach0

DW can be set to delay it's start, and we've got a timer on the WM & TD. Watched our meter this morning - flicked over to normal at 7.30. OH and I looked at each other with an  expression, and realised that we need to rearrange (what I really mean is get out of bed earlier!) our morning routine to make sure we're in and out of the shower before 7.30. God knows what we're going to do in winter!

Don't know if anyones mentioned this as I haven't had time to read all the posts, but I hate using 'new' paper to make notes, shopping lists etc. I search for old envelopes and scrap paper even though I have those telephone pads that people have bought me. I only use these if I can't find scrap paper first. Think it's because when I was a child, my mum was the same, used to cut up cornflake packets etc. to write lists on. - I'm not that bad yet.
Also I save elastic bands from spring onions, flowers, postman etc.Second purse £101/100

SailorSam, I went to a talk on composting once, and someone asked about activators. The speaker mentioned a couple of brand names, but added that he'd always found "recycled cider" very good. There was a momentary silence while the penny dropped, then much laughter!
There was a discussion (on here I think) about the relative efficacy of male and female urine. I don't think it makes any difference, not noticeably anyway, and I know of at least one woman friend who has a bucket especially for the purpose!Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
Georgina, that's really early, cos in the winter it'll be 0630. Unless you want it like this, might be worth asking the meter man next time he comes if he can adjust the timer on the meter? It must be said that having cheap elec til 0830 in summer is really handy!
Ditto re scrap paper and elastic bands btw! And OBVIOUSLY foil tins from ready meals...and sometimes tin foil if not really used. Also just fitted new elements to a 20 yr old Dualit toaster and cleaned with oven mate, good as new and quite easy0 -
I've read to about half way through this thread, but thought I'd share a couple of my favourite things to do...
- old clothes that can't be handed-down/charity shopped become usable fabric - i've got bags made from t-shirts, cushion covers from jeans, patchworking material from old sheets/tops/even underwear...!
- empty jars/loo roll middles become desk storage in my work room - got some for holding solder sticks, pens, zips... you name it, it's got a recycled home.
- cereal boxes become storage for magazine/mail/college notes - much, much cheaper than the "proper" ones!
- i use newspaper for cleaning all of my glass, whether its windows or work i've made (free newspapers obviously, can't remember the last time i actually paid for one!)*2016 - the year of the savings account!*

Got half way through this thread. Reading about people looking for the fullest bottle of milk ect reminds me of the film Clerks where the guidance counsellor is searching for the perfect carton of eggs.
I am currently decorating so save coffee jars for cleaning brushes in, I also have a large coffee jar which I use as a penny jar.
I use an old toothbrush and toothpaste to clean silver jewellery, it works a treat.
I save ice cream tubs, plastic takeaway tubs to use as sandwich boxes or to store food in.
When people I know are getting rid of perfectly good electrical items, I will happily ask if I can have them. I have got a washing machine, dryer and food processor this way.
I hoard carrier bags and use as rubbish bags, bags for storage ect.
In my student days I would put vodka into a hip flask and hide about my person, when I get to the nightclub I would just order a coke and sneakily decant the vodka into the glass. I would also have a few drinks before leaving the house to get me on my way.
My Aunt gets tubs of E45 free on prescription and always has lots of unopened tubs around, far more than she will use, so she gives me a tub everytime I come to visit. I have not had to buy any in years!0
