Can someone please settle a disagreement between myself and a relative over the stopping of EMA
If a young person is already receiving it and will begin their second year of study in september does the ema stop for everyone or do those already receiving it continue to get it until the end of their course (after year two - ending summer 2012). I have searched but seem to find contradicting responses on various websites.
I've heard that this is an issue that's being fought for at the moment.0 -

My son is in this situation & his college have sent us a letter to say that the EMA will finish in July 2011 - it will not continue until the end of his A levels in 20120 -

Whilst this is bad news, thank you for the information. Perhaps we will get a letter soon. My cousin's a carer for a young person who's tutor is going around telling students that they will get it until the end of their studies in 2012. I thought this didn't sound correct.0 -

And kids of single parent families can claim; even if the errant husband is paying the mortgage, bills etc!
My husband and I work hard, we're not big earners, and we do feel penalised for being in a normal functional family; no-one bails us out.
All my kids have part-time jobs, and we're proud of them, but still feel resentful on their behalf that some of their peers just sit on their backsides and "earn" £120 per month ....what sort of work ethic are they cultivating?
So as far as I'm concerned, scrapping this benefit is one of the best things the government has done so far.0 -
out of interest has anyone heard anything about ema 's replacement0

I agree that a lot of people who got EMA really didn't need it BUT I'm one of the ones who would actually need it...
Without it I don't think I'll be able to stay in education at all
Just hoping there is some kind of replacement I'll be able to use2012: £10 Valued Opinions voucher ♥0 -

Not sure if this is reflective everywhere, but I have enquired to the college my son is attending this september about an EMA replacement and this was their response:
"Regarding EMA – there is no government scheme to replace the scheme. The college may, and I underline may, be able to help students who have financial difficulty. This would be through our learner support money. However, to date we do not know how much money we will be allocated for the next academic year. "
As a family who also rely on EMA as a necessity, this scrappage of EMA will bring hardship0 -
Just had to register to say that is has been announced today that EMA will continue for those receiving it this year into next year (but at a reduced amount)."There will also be a partial reprieve for students who are already on courses and receiving EMAs, who had previously not known whether funding would continue beyond September 2011.
Those who started courses in 2009-10 will now continue to receive the same payments until the end of the 2011-12 academic year.
And students who started courses last September and currently qualify for £30 per week payments will receive continuing support of £20 per week until the end of the next academic year."0 -

Source the bbc news site but i can't post links yet

"The biggest amounts - £1,200 per year - will be given to 12,000 teenagers with the greatest needs, such as pupils in care, care leavers and the severely disabled"
Having read through it, and because my son is not in any of the above catagories, I am not excited by this news0 -
is there any guidance on this yet?
my daughter starts college in September hopefully and will be full time and I'm not sure whether I will get some help or not, seems I have to pay £120 for the course upfront and as it is art I will have to pay out alot for materials0
