I agree, some of my childrens friends get EMA, and I'm convinced they are fiddling the system when I look at their houses /cars etc, not to mention the pricey phones, gadgets etc they own!
And kids of single parent families can claim; even if the errant husband is paying the mortgage, bills etc!
My husband and I work hard, we're not big earners, and we do feel penalised for being in a normal functional family; no-one bails us out.
All my kids have part-time jobs, and we're proud of them, but still feel resentful on their behalf that some of their peers just sit on their backsides and "earn" £120 per month ....what sort of work ethic are they cultivating?
So as far as I'm concerned, scrapping this benefit is one of the best things the government has done so far.0 -
I am actually glad they are stopping the EMA grant it's so unfair that my daughter who is in 6th form has to work in a part time job to get her money yet others get it for doing nothing. both me and my husband work but there is no way I could afford to give her the EMA equivalent especially as her sister is also going into 6th form next year. This system is actually making the children whose parents work worse off. Tell me again why do I work?Make £5 a day in May total so far £20

Oh they are, but probably not in the way you mean (I hope). It's not going to anyone...its being totally scrapped, so sucks to you if your parent(s) earn £12,000 a year but you aspire to better things.0 -

I hope that is not what will happen. I read somewhere that there was going to be something else in it's place for the poorest families.
(Not that my daughter get's it that often while her college keep chopping and changing her timetable hence making her late or miss lessons.)
I can count on one hand the amount of times she has actually recieved EMA since september.
I just hope something will be put in it's place for people like us.0 -

If you live in Scotland, they are keeping the EMA and not stopping it like England and Wales.
Wow I didn't know that. That's terrible. I believe tuition fees are free in Scotland too? Bet Scottish MP's voted to raise ours!!
Just like free prescriptions, hospital car parking, dental fees etc, across Wales and Scotland.
Was debating this issue recently with someone who said the Scots and Welsh do not waste money on things like the Olympics, which is a very fair point. But if we were getting Welsh and Scots tax payer subsidies I guess we could afford to spend our money on something useful!0 -

Hope you don't mind me posting, I have been reading through some of your comments about the EMA cuts but does anyone know whether they are getting rid of ALG too? I currently receive the full adult learning grant because I'm 19 years old. I did a course before this one I'm currently doing but I was hospitalised in my last year so I did not have the chance to complete it. Since then my parents got made redundant and haven't been able to give me any money so I have been living off my ALG. My bus pass is £62pm and my books can be a fortune. I have a part time job but the hours are 2/3 a week so I earn about £10 and I wouldn't be able to afford a bus pass never mind anything else.I would love another job but I have applied everywhere and had no response. I really wish the government would see that they are making such a huge mistake, it would have been fairer to restrict it more to the people who really do need this.0

Can someone please settle a disagreement between myself and a relative over the stopping of EMA
If a young person is already receiving it and will begin their second year of study in september does the ema stop for everyone or do those already receiving it continue to get it until the end of their course (after year two - ending summer 2012). I have searched but seem to find contradicting responses on various websites.0
