What happened to the car?!
Good luck with the job application, got my fingers crossed for you.5 -
Yes, what happened? Anyone hurt?
NST March lion #8; NSD ; MFW9/3/23 Whoop Whoop!!!4 -
Ooops - some catching up to do!!
So last Monday I worked AM + PM and ended up with a 15m gap to grab food (thankfully I'd taken something with me, as I was timetabled in for a longer gap than that) Grabbed my phone and read an email that the buyers of the BTL needed to exchange/ complete the following day, as their mtge offer was expiring (they have been so annoying) - went back and said ok - although that was then costing me more money for an additional indemnity that I had hoped to negate the need for by getting some docs by email - but no time - felt like no choice, though. Sent DH a quick text. Phoned him on the way home from work about it and his reply was that he needed a new car - standard - he's been saying he 'needs' a new car for months, and I usually reply that he doesn't, it's just he WANTS a new car.... Anyway - after my usual reply he said 'no - he'd written the car off and needed a new car' Turns out he wasn't paying attention and went into the back of someone at some traffic lights -not a scratch on their car, but his airbags went off and his number plate got ripped off and bumper cracked by their tow hitch point. They were fine, thankfully - just shocked - but they did have a large dog in their car - unsecured and sitting on the passenger's lap and that was rather shook up, more than the people. DH was fine - not a scratch on him - the airbags didn't even touch him, the impact was that low a speed. Both the dash ones and footwell ones went off and that's why his car is a technical write off - uneconomic to repair. Insce co (Saga) were great and very efficient. He has had his price for how much he's getting back ( a little more than he thought) and has found a new car to buy - sadly the garage (online, obv) aren't budging even £500 on price. I'd like him to wait until he can drive one (so after the 12th), as we could manage on just my car if necessary for a few days - his insurance hire car/ roller skate (little corsa to replace a 7 seater VW) goes back later this week. He is not so keen - meh. We do need to collect DS1 from uni next weekend - along with all his stuff - my golf is not large enough for such a trip! So we have hired a van
- £85 for 48 hours (they only open Sat morning and not at all on Sunday, so needed a Sat - Mon morning hire) and a wee bit of cashback. From a reputable national company, too
Cheaper than hiring a 7 seater car (approx £130+ VAT)
So big spends on a new car needed!
Oh - and completion didn't happen last Monday. I ended up working last Tues, Weds and Thurs, too (probably a good job - extra money, and all that!) so was trying to chase Est agents and solicitors in between exams on Tues/ Weds- we ended up exchanging at around 4.50pm on Weds - with completion happening on the 7th - annoyingly in the new tax year - grrr. But - it's done!!! (well, almost!) Whoop! And we now have a fridge and a freezer sat in our garage from the property.... Just need to visit on Thurs morning to re-do meter reads and take photos, do a last check we haven't left anything and then post the key through the door (Est agents also have one which the buyers will collect) And that will be the end of it - bar tax paperwork for this year and next. There will be some CGT to pay, so I will calculate that and then set it aside, as it won't be needed until I submit 2021/2022 tax, so it can earn a few pence interest/ or maybe win some money on premium bonds in the meantime
Jobs - not sure now whether I want the admin role! - I think my problem is I am inherently lazy and don't like the idea after all this time of a regular schedule...... We shall see - I may not even get anywhere, and then it's not an issue!I am definitely going for the other casual hours role there, though, as it would be a direct swap for the one I do at school 2, just more convenient
I am also slightly concerned at the state the house would get into if I worked regular hours - my lot aren't very helpful around the house!
Onto Easter weekend - we had friends visit on Saturday - cakes and tea/ coffee in the garden for almost 4 hours - was nice to see them (last seen late last year). My mum visited yesterday morning to swap eggs - tea and biscuits/ cake in the garden for around 90mins. She also brought me some excess plants from her garden too - bonusAnd then yesterday afternoon whilst the lamb was in the oven we went for a walk along the canal path and crossed to the other side at the bridge, as we could see my sister's mum and partner on their boat - so we stopped and sat on the canalside for around 40/45 mins (thankfully the ground was not damp!) and had a nice catch up chat with them in the sunshine. That means we have been super sociable this weekend!!
- all within the rules, though
Dinner was a leg of lamb with lots of veg - slow cooked in a foil tent for 4 hours, so was oh-so-tender and falling apart. There should have been more leftovers, but I kept taking hunks of it off and eating it with a spoon of mint sauce and the thick lamb-y gravy. As a result, I was so stuffed that I didn't eat anything else until just before L1ne 0f Duty at 9pm, when I had a slice of the lemon and raspberry sponge DD baked that morning
I've been spending time on pensions this weekend (just a bit) - partly inspired by Ed's FIREside Chats threadI think we should be fine - although we are now back considering transferring our DB pensions out of their schemes (DH's tfr value is rather nice!) - slightly scary, but I think we will probably end up doing it. No pressing need right now, though, so we don't have to rush into the decision
Hope you've all had a lovely weekend - the weather has been much better than expected here (although today is a little grey - but it is dry!) :0 xI am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £2010 -

Hi GT
Not sure if you are aware but the CGT rules have changed and you have to pay within 30 days of a sale, even if you don't know the exact amount you have to pay a guestimate figure and then sort it out.8 -
Blimey greent - what an eventful time you've been having. Sorry to hear about the car but what a relief that no one was hurt. Good news about the btl - it will be good to be done with all that hassle.
Hasn't it been lovely being able to socialise again. Makes such a difference to our emotional health. My spirits are definitely higher after a weekend of visitors.

Thanks again - that's super important to knowx

DH was lucky he didn't hurt them (unless there's a delayed claim for whiplash....) and himself - was sheer lack of concentration on his part!
Forgot there was a month end that's happened:
Savings in March (not money set aside for uni costs/ annual bills/ house maintenance etc):S&S ISA 450
2 X £400 Reg Saver 800
2 X £250 Reg Saver 500
PBonds 75
Random (just stuck in account as spare funds) 250 (this is DD's 'rent' and phone bill cost rounded up)
TOTAL 2075
Bit lower than Feb, but still pretty good
Have also added more than the usual standing order amount to DS1's uni fund - although he now has no idea what he is doing next year (didn't get onto the 2nd degree course he wanted), so this may or may not be needed for him (if he chooses a MSc instead his funding should cover most of his costs, I think - post grad loans are pretty good from DD's experience)
April PB draw last week saw another £25 win - sadly nothing larger, but I'm not going to moan at an additional £25 of bonds for free!
Extra money in March (didn't keep a record, so some of this is off the top of my head, so not accurate!)
Sainz N3ctar points cashed out 20.00
A1rt1mes rewards 5.00
flebay (approx) 30.00
Pr0l1f1c 16.61
Qmee 0.66
plus some bank int, a bank reward, a few refunds from shopping apps (although I probably wouldn't have bought the items if they weren't free/ heavily discounted, tbh) and we used discounted gift cards for shopping @ Sainz + TEsco (@ 3.5% and 3% respectively - bought through DH's work scheme), so a few extra £ gained there. And I did a couple of small 0li0 collections (But I wouldn't be buying the pastries) Ooh - and I got a free box from S1mply C00k from someone using my referral link
Have collected a few 0li0 items this morning (2pts skim milk - saves me a trip to the smkt today, some pastries (2 eaten, 3 frozen), a GF rye sourdough (was advertised as just sourdough, so we shall see what it is like!), some fresh gnocchi and a 'Finest' wholemeal loaf (I didn't ask for this!) I need to have a good tidy of the freezers - we have managed some good YS purchases the past few weeks, so things have been just shoved in where they will fit, rather than where I like them! One is in the garage, though - and it's cold out there! (has been hailing earlier)
Games afternoon planned for after lunch - chocolate will feature
