To Sellers Who Include a Free Gift and Don't Say So....

Sorry if this sounds ungrateful, but I'm getting a tad irritated by sellers who include a free gift with my item and don't mark it as such on the invoice or mention it in the listing. I'm not the kind of person who just assumes an extra item is free and keeps it - for all I know somebody else could have ordered that item and is waiting for it somewhere. It has happened 3 times so far just this week and only one of the items was marked "free gift" with a little smiley, which I thought was very sweet. That seller has a happy customer, the other 2 have a slightly confused customer.

It means I have to send an email to the seller and ask. If the item is not a gift and I ask the seller and he says it's a mistake then I will feel obliged to send it back to them or pay for it. With the return postage at my expense presumably.

Sellers, if you include a gift or sample PLEASE say so in your listing or just scribble on the invoice so we know! Thank you.

The thing is, although it might seem nice, if you don't actually want the free gift it is a bit pointless really!

  • Do buyers appreciate a free gift (if it is stated as a free gift) and what do buyers like to get?

I think it depends on what you buy.
For example if I bought a pair of trainers I might like free spare laces, or if I bought say 10 craft packs (sequins etc) it might be nice to get a small sample pack of something else similar ?

I think a small sweetie or something is nice but with allergies and stuff these days I know a lot of people wouldn't be keen. I've had in the past a small sweet, a Winnie the Pooh pencil and a small sheet of stickers which I liked, but I'm into that kind of thing! Like OrkneyStar said, if you don't like/use those kind of things they'll just end up being thrown in the bin or something. If you keep it similar to the item which has been purchased it might work better, for example the Winnie the Pooh pencil with a Winnie the Pooh teddy. I also ordered some cello bags for crafting at Christmas and received some pretty strips of cardstock, which goes with the whole crafty theme.

I know it's a bit different to a free gift. Years ago clothing that I bought came wrapped beautifully in coloured tissue & a ribbon bow inside the mailing bag, must have cost the seller a fortune & taken ages, that was lovely but when I took the clothing out she'd put loads of confetti stuff in it. That I wasn't impressed with. Took bl00dy ages to vaccuum the stuff up. I'd be a bit worried about sweets unwrapping & becoming sticky.

I sell wholesale lots, so occasionally throw in a few extra items if they're over. I have received more complaints about free items than anything else, I spent 20 minutes on one call to someone who wanted a replacement for the extra items I sent as they weren't as described (they weren't described!). So now if I send any extras I make sure they know about them.

I have always got lovely feedback when I have enclosed freebies. I only include an extra if it relates to the item so I know it is something that person would use. Some of the things I have enclosed have actually been things that I have got free. E.g. I sold some yarn and had a pattern (specifically for that brand of yarn) that came as a free gift with a knitting magazine. It was just a folded up sheet of A4 paper and it had "free" printed on it, but I still got lovely feedback.
