Fatality on train route last night - can I reasonably expect a refund for taxi fare?

Really??
A rich man's world perhaps?
Well, I am neither rich (or I wouldn't be bothered about a 'few quid' as someone else put it) or a man.
In a very black and white sense, I paid for a service that did not materialise. I'm sorry if you or others think I am out of order for inquiring about the possibility of getting money back that we can ill afford to spend. I am assuming that you are not a commuter otherwise your opinion may have been different.
So flame me all you want if you have nothing better to do with your time.0 -

There's no harm in trying, but as other posters have said I don't think that you'll have much joy unless you can show that you really had no alternative. Train companies will sometimes pay for alternative transport (rail replacement bus services or taxis) or even an overnight stay, but you need to get them to arrange it themselves so that they can use the cheapest and most efficient method for them (they'll have contracts with specific taxi and coach companies and hotels and will pay them direct rather than refund you ).
Was there really no-one around to ask - did you get off the train at an unmanned station ? Could you have remained on the train and spoken to the train manager / ticket inspector ? Did you try to ring South Eastern customer services for advice ? (They are apparently open 24 hours a day ?)
You may be able to get your season ticket extended by a day or a voucher to compensate for the disruption, but I think it's very doubtful you'll get cold hard cash, and even then I don't think it would be for more that that of the rail trip you couldn't make - not the taxi alternative.0 -

The station was all locked up, it was about 7.15pm.
The ticket inspector had walked through all the carriages and told us that he had no idea what the plan was. With hindsight, I suppose we could have rung National Rail / Southeastern (we didn't even think of that) but as everyone else had got off of the train we thought that was the thing to do. There was certainly no bus replacement service available and we waited over half an hour for the taxi so if a bus had turned up we would have seen it. We would have checked online but my OH's phone had no signal and mine has no internet.
There was a local taxi office at the station but they had nothing available by the time we got there.
When we got home, we checked online and at that point there was a replacement bus service running from the station before the one we were at to our local station, but as I said, the ticket inspector didn't know about it at the time we were on the train.
I think the best we can hope for our rail vouchers (which will be pretty useless as out season tickets have another 8 months left to run and we only use the trains for commuting) but I will try.0 -
