Oh, thanks might take my son here for a day in the easter. Thanks for posting.
  • The three museums in Derby are free. I work at Pickford's House Museum on Friar Gate in Derby, a Grade 1 listed building built in 1770 which is set out as a Georgian family home. Free admission & parking! Well worth a visit, and been given the VAQAS award at least 5 times.

The National Coal Mining Museum for England
    www.ncm.org.uk

    Free admission

The National Coal Mining Museum for England provides a great day out with a unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground down one of Britain's oldest working mines. Situated in a rural setting, it offers an unusual combination of exciting experiences, whilst providing a genuine insight into the hard-working lives of miners through the ages.
The Museum is open daily from 10.00am until 5.00pm (closed 1st January and 24th-26th December annually).

Plus pit ponies, special exhibitions, shop, cafe, nature trail etc.

Guildhall Museum, Rochester, Kent is free and a lovely place to take the children. I can't find a website for it but is in the High Street, so have a look around some of the lovely shops too.

Also Maidstone Museum is free: http://www.museum.maidstone.gov.uk/

I was about to post the Discovery Museum in Newcastle but there's also all of these that are free (except Segedunum where only kids are free)

  • Would really recommend Derby Museum, it's over 3 floors and has a lovely nature section. Very interactive and quite often have free activities on over the holiday. Library is attached so can attend storytime or sit in kids section.

  • There's nothing yet in Kent on the Free Museums and Galleries list.

I can start you off with the wonderful Guildhall Museum in Rochester.

Search for the Medway council site, click on Visiting Medway, Places to visit, then find the link for the Guildhall Museum.

    Good luck.
  • My home town of Bideford, Devon has the Burton Art Gallery and Museum

It is totally free and has a continually changing programme of exhibitions, museum and is currently working on opening a ceramics gallery. It also has a craft gallery where you can buy excellent works, a cafe and also houses the Bideford Tourist Information Centre to boot.
    Open Mon to Sat 10 - 4 & Sun 11 - 4.
    Well worth a look.
